A new TikTok video shows Dylan O’Brien’s transformation for the upcoming Hulu movie Not Okay, with the actor playing a character that has a ton of tattoos. Written and directed by Quinn Shephard, who previously helmed films such as The Miseducation of Cameron Post and the 2018 romantic drama Midnight Sun, the Hulu comedy is described as a satire. The story focuses on a young woman (played by Zoey Deutch) who, in her misguided attempts to find fame and friends, ends up faking a trip to Paris. She hopes the trip will give a boost to her social media presence. However, a terrifying incident occurs in the real world and becomes part of the otherwise fake trip.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

It was recently announced that O’Brien had signed on to co-star in Not Okay. He’ll appear alongside Mia Isaac, Embeth Davidtz, Nadia Alexander, Tia Dionne Hodge, Negin Farsad, Karan Soni, and Dash Perry. And while there aren’t many details about the project other than its cast, Not Okay has already become a trending topic thanks to a viral photo of O’Brien sporting blonde hair for his role as Colin in the satirical comedy. Now, a new timelapse video shows the Teen Wolf alum getting a whole bunch of tattoos.

The video features the actor getting ready to change into Colin. A big part of the transformation is the fake tattoos, which were designed and drawn by artist Arielle Toelke. According to Cynthia Vanis, a hairstylist working on the film who reposted the video (originally shared by O’Brien on TikTok) to her Instagram, the fake tattoos are added every day and then removed at the end of filming. You can check out the video below, along with some close-ups of the tattoos shared by Vanis.

The tattoos indicate that O’Brien will be portraying a very interesting character, as Colin’s ink runs the gamut from a drawing of a pizza to a tattoo of the word “hopeless.” It could be the case as well, given the satirical bent of Not Okay, that the film playfully mocks individuals that get a particular tattoo just because it feels good in the moment and without much thought for how it’ll look in the future. In any case, it seems certain that O’Brien plays a very different role than his typical protagonists.

Throughout his career, O’Brien has typically played the relatively straitlaced heroic figure in films like The Maze Runner. The same is true for his recent starring roles in Love and Monsters, as well as the thriller Flashback. Alternatively, for arguably his best-known role as Stiles on Teen Wolf, he embodied a sarcastic sidekick with jokes that barely mask hidden depths. From the looks of it, Not Okaymight just be more of a strictly comedic turn for an actor that has shown the ability to shine in those kinds of performances when given the opportunity.
