Echostar Alaqua Cox reveals details about the Marvel Cinematic Universe spinoff series, including its new setting. The character Echo was originally introduced in the Disney+ MCU series Hawkeye, which followed Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) on a holiday adventure in New York City after his retirement from the Avengers. One of the main antagonists of the series was Echo (Cox), whose real name is Maya Lopez. She is the leader of the Tracksuit Mafia and a mentee of the crime lord Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio). She is seeking revenge on Hawkeye’s alter ego Ronin after he murdered her father in his vigilante rampage during The Blip.

Before Hawkeye even premiered, it was announced that Cox would be reprising the role in a spinoff series called Echo, expected on Disney+ in mid-2023 as part of Phase 5 of the MCU. The show, which was created by Marion Dayre, is set to have episodes directed by Sydney Freeland and Catriona McKenzie. In addition to Echo returning, the show will also feature D’Onofrio as Kingpin, Zahn McClarnon as Echo’s father William, and Charlie Cox returning as Daredevil, the role he originated in the Netflix series Daredevil and The Defenders before officially entering the MCU with cameos in Spider-Man: No Way Home and an upcoming episode of She-Hulk, as well as a new series titled Daredevil: Born Again.

Today, Marvel Entertainment shared a video on Twitter following up with the cast and crew of many upcoming MCU projects that were teased at yesterday’s D23 Expo 2022 panel. In the video, Cox shared details about what fans can expect coming up in Echo. This includes the new setting, as Echo will forgo New York City in order to return to her roots in Oklahoma while she tries to “get back involved with her family and connect with her indigenous roots.” Read Cox’s full quote below:

You will see, once she leaves New York, she is faced with some issues so she goes to Oklahoma, where she originally [lived.] She will try to find the definition of family and community and what it means to her, because she’s been alone for so long, so she wants to try to get back involved with her family and connect with her indigenous roots as well.

So far, the MCU has really only explored Echo’s relationship with her father, which was a fiercely loyal one. However, fans have not yet learned more about the rest of her family and why she is disconnected from them. From this quote, it seems that they may have become estranged when she left for the city with her father, so there will likely be a lot of healing necessary while Echo attempts to recuperate from her time in New York.

Echo promises to tell a much more intimate and human-level story than is typical for MCU series. While she will certainly have some epic battles coming her way, she doesn’t have any superpowers, and being removed from an urban setting will give her a lot of space to breathe before showing off her fighting skills again. It will likely be very interesting for fans to see how the character interacts with such a drastically different environment.
