World-renowned English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran has joined the cast of the upcoming British action-comedy film Sumotherhood. The project will mark the return of actor-writer-director and BAFTA Award-winner Adam Deacon, ending his long hiatus from the industry after making his directorial debut over a decade ago with 2011’s urban comedy Anuvahood. Production on Sumotherhood is set to begin in East London this February, with no official release date announced as of yet, though it is said to be debuting later this year.

Now, it’s been announced (via THR) that the famed pop star is the latest addition to the cast of Sumotherhood, which also includes Danny Sapani (Black Panther, Penny Dreadful), Jennifer Saunders (Sing, Death on the Nile), Peter Serafinowicz, Leomie Anderson, London Hughes, Kevin Bishop, Jaime Winstone, Vas Blackwood, and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. They join the previously announced cast of Deacon, Jazzie Zonzolo, Richie Campbell, and British-Congolese comedian Eddie Kadi. The film will be produced by Deacon’s production company, Deaconstructed, alongside the newly-formed Piece of Pie Productions and Belstone Pictures.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Sheeran has had a few minor acting roles in the past, most of which have been cameos. Some of his onscreen credits include the popular fantasy series Game of Thrones, 2019’s musical comedy Yesterday, and, most recently, Netflix’s action-comedy film Red Notice. The celebrated singer of pop songs such as “Shape of You” and “I See Fire” has steadily been adding to his growing filmography and will be looking to follow in the footsteps of House of Gucci‘s Lady Gaga and Don’t Look Up‘s Ariana Grande, who have made waves in Hollywood after seamless transitions from the world of music. Sheeran’s role in Sumotherhood is unclear at the moment, and while the film might not match the scale of the aforementioned titles, his past appearances suggest that he could make the most of this opportunity.
