Elden Ring fans and Ubisoft critics have banded around a recently unleashed meme that praises the former while making a dig at the latter. The recently released and critically acclaimed FromSoftware title has been the inspiration for countless memes, with several gamers making direct use of Elden Ring‘s messaging system to make jokes and references to IPs like Fortnite.

When looking at the broad spectrum of modern video game developers, Ubisoft and FromSoftware are about as far apart as companies can get. Elden Ring has made a major impact on the gaming community for its challenging, unforgiving combat, but also for its novel approach to open-world game design. Rather than constantly pointing players in the “right” direction via waypoints, markers, and quest logs, Elden Ring gives very general, sometimes unclear, instructions, forcing players to carve their own paths. Ubisoft, on the other hand, has been making open-world games for over a decade now and has settled into an instantly recognizable formula that utilizes all aforementioned conventions and mechanics. Variations of this formula can be found in nearly all of the Ubisoft franchises, from the globe-trotting Far Cry games to the time-traveling Assassin’s Creed series.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

A particularly poignant meme shared by Reddit user WhoAmIEven2 highlights this distinction. The image is a screenshot from Elden Ring plastered with icons, markers, and messy UI elements. Collectibles are tracked on one side of the screen, while the opposite side is home to an intrusive “message of the day” note. Other Ubisoft staples, like a minimap, can also be found in this meme. There is even a prompt to “press X for Tarnished Sense“, which clearly pokes fun at Ubisoft staples like Eagle Vision in Assassin’s Creed.

The meme is perhaps exaggerating the typical Ubisoft style a bit, but it’s hard not to see the resemblance. Ubisoft focuses on open-world games, with exceptions like Hyperscape being short-lived forays or one-off experiments. Despite Ubisoft’s persistent efforts in the open-world genre, there are many gamers who would argue that it has fallen short when it comes to innovation, especially when measured against games like Elden Ring.

Respect and appreciation for FromSoftware’s latest opus shine through in this meme alongside the Ubisoft negativity. WhoAmIEven2 and other gamers in the comments clearly enjoy the fact that Elden Ring is a game that refuses to hold its players’ hands or dumb things down for the sake of clarity. Ubisoft will always have its fans, but this Elden Ring meme undeniably serves as a cutting critique of its exhausted approach to open-world games.
