Another humorous message has been left in Elden Ring, this time referencing legendary fantasy franchise The Lord of the Rings. Since the game’s release last week, players have been using its messaging system to leave behind funny, tongue-in-cheek, or referential notes, with a popular example being the bevy of Fortnite memes showing up in Elden Ring.

At first glance, Elden Ring and The Lord of the Rings have a lot in common. Aside from their similar names, both IPs utilize instantly recognizable dark fantasy tropes like knights, dragons, and sorcerers. Elden Ring‘s lore was even penned by George R.R. Martin, who often cites J.R.R. Tolkien and The Lord of the Rings as major influences in his work. While The Lands Between doesn’t have any explicit ties to Mordor or its surrounding areas, the fictional region’s varied topography and treacherous landscape make for a suitable backdrop for adventure, and it wouldn’t be unusual for an Elden Ring player to find themselves in a situation reminiscent of a Baggins tale. Elden Ring even boasts a temporary co-op feature, making it easier to roleplay as a band of brave Tolkien-esque travelers.

This similarity is certainly recognized by at least one player. Reddit user Master-Spare-4782 recently shared a screenshot taken from the game, displaying a message perched on the edge of a magma-filled chasm. The message reads “Try throwing, Elden Ring!”. It’s written in the uncanny, strange fashion necessitated by FromSoftware’s messaging system, but it looks like a clear reference to Frodo throwing the Ring of Power into Mount Doom.

While messages in Elden Ring, along with most other FromSoftware games, can serve as helpful hints much of the time, it’s always nice to see some cheeky humor every now and then. Elden Ring can be a challenging, sometimes creepy, experience, so some levity is always welcome. This message is just one example of how players can make their own fun in the game.

Of course, FromSoftware’s best-selling action RPG ultimately has very little in common with The Lord of the Rings. The studio’s now-perfected tone and gameplay coupled with Martin’s subversive fantasy writing make for a world that is much more grotesque and uninviting than Tolkien’s, where darkness is an encroaching threat rather than a pervasive reality. Still, modern pieces of fantasy like Elden Ring would not be possible without the extensive groundwork laid by Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and subsequent works, so references like this one are all too fitting.
