FromSoftware’s epic role-playing game Elden Ring has now become the sixth most popular game on Steam. The open-world soulslike adventure takes players on a journey through The Lands Between as they strive to defeat various demigods and become the Elden Lord. Despite a frustrating Elden Ring Steam Cloud error, it seems that Valve’s digital gaming platform is still a popular way to experience the new FromSoftware title.

Elden Ring was first announced back in 2019, and fans subsequently waited more than two years to get their hands on the large-scale ARPG. While the game has received universal praise for its enormous and detailed open world, some technical issues have plagued the soulslike since launch. The PC version of Elden Ring, in particular, suffers from frame rate issues and graphical glitches even on powerful hardware. A Steam Cloud Error has also stricken some gamers, resulting in them losing progress on their journey through The Lands Between. An Elden Ring patch for PC and PS5 was recently released, however, fixing multiple bugs and graphics issues.

Despite Elden Ring’s technical issues on PC, SteamDB reveals that FromSoftware’s unforgiving experience recently reached Steam’s sixth highest player count of all time. The title’s current 24-hour player count peak is 953,426 gamers, as reported by PCGamesN, which surpassed Amazon Games’ massively multiplayer title New World and its 913,634 player peak. Elden Ring specifically ranks as Steam’s second most-played single-player title, sitting behind Cyberpunk 2077 and its 1,054,388 player peak. Considering this golden achievement was hit on Elden Ring’s second weekend since release, it seems likely that the game will eventually surpass one million concurrent players.

While Steam users can enjoy Elden Ring from the comfort of a custom-built gaming computer, the recently-released Steam Deck can also turn the PC version into a portable adventure. Unfortunately, Elden Ring screen stutter on Steam Deck disappointed many fans who tried taking The Lands Between with them on the go. The issue apparently stemmed from Elden Ring streaming assets in the background, which overwhelmed the Steam Deck and led to heavy stutter issues. Fortunately a patch was released, specifically for the Steam Deck version of the game, which helped to fix the issue and create a smoother experience.

By taking elements from past soulslike titles and fitting them into an open-world experience, FromSoftware has turned Elden Ring into a true masterpiece. Despite some technical issues, the game’s accessibility and thrilling scale have allowed it to quickly become one of Steam’s most popular games. As the fantasy epic continues to attract more gamers, it seems inevitable that Elden Ring will surpass one million concurrent Tarnished players on Steam.
