A brand-new cinematic trailer for The Elder Scrolls Online teases an upcoming expansion that will take players to a never-before-seen part of Tamriel. The massively multiplayer online role-playing game lets players freely explore the beloved fantasy world alongside other players, with developer ZeniMax Online Studios regularly expanding the game world through updates. The Elder Scrolls Online’s Deadlands expansion launched back in November 2021, bringing an end to the Gates of Oblivion storyline which ran through last year.

First released in 2014, The Elder Scrolls Online is an MMORPG spin-off of Bethesda Game Studios’ single-player Elder Scrolls titles. While most entries in the fantasy saga allowed players to explore just a single province of Tamriel, such as Skyrim or The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion’s Cyrodiil, ESO lets players journey to a much wider range of different regions and landmarks. New locations are frequently added to the game through downloadable content, which players can access by purchasing the DLC itself or paying for a subscription service. Since the title’s original launch there have been numerous pieces of post-launch support, and The Elder Scrolls Online’s DLC and expansions have built the game into a truly massive experience.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Released by publisher Bethesda Softworks via YouTube, a new Elder Scrolls Online cinematic trailer hints at new content coming in 2022. The cryptic video shows three ships sailing towards a mysterious island location, with tropical cliffside geography and architecture that reflects a colonial style. A figure in heavy armor watches the three ships approach during a massive storm, ambiguously ending the short teaser. A strategist’s map suggests that the next Elder Scrolls Online story may revolve around political intrigue, rather than demonic magic, but nothing is certain about the MMORPG’s 2022 content. A global reveal of the year-long storyline will be held by Bethesda on January 27.

Despite the recent conclusion of the Gates of Oblivion story arc, developer ZeniMax Online Studios has kept the future of The Elder Scrolls Online a bit of a mystery. Alongside the brand-new cinematic trailer, an October 2021 interview with creative director Rich Lambert gave fans a small bit of information regarding the fantasy epic’s next chapter. When questioned about the future of Elder Scrolls OnlineLambert explained that the game’s next expansion was “not going to be something that anybody is thinking about.” The previously unseen island location in the new cinematic trailer seems to confirm this idea, and Lambert’s statement could also hint at unforeseen game mechanics such as sailing ships across the sea.

While the reveal is only a small taste of The Elder Scrolls Online’s future, the 2022 cinematic trailer gives fans plenty to think about. The video seems to hint at a shift away from The Elder Scrolls’ Daedric Princes and towards more realistic political conflict, and many fans are already theorizing about the upcoming expansion’s island setting. Delivering an early glimpse at surprising new content, The Elder Scrolls Online’s creators will fully reveal the title’s 2022 plans on January 27.
