Elijah Wood faces his fans in a funny new Lord of the Rings themed Super Bowl commercial. Published in 1954, J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring kicked off a fantasy saga that would go on to be one of the most popular book series of all time, selling over 150 million copies worldwide.

Given its sprawling fantasy setting and cast of non-human characters, it’s no surprise that adapting Lord of the Rings into a live-action film for decades proved an impossible task. But technology eventually caught up with Tolkien’s massive imagination and in 2001 Peter Jackson finally pulled off the impossible, creating a movie version of the author’s fantasy world that not only lived up to fan expectations but opened up the world of Lord of the Rings to a whole new generation. Jackson’s original LOTR trilogy later culminated with 2003’s The Return of the King, which went on to win an astonishing eleven Oscars including Best Picture. Jackson in later years revisited the world of Tolkien for a second trilogy adapting the novel The Hobbit, but the reception for those films was mixed compared to the almost universal acclaimed heaped upon the original three LOTR movies.

Twenty years after Jackson made the dream of a worthy live-action adaptation of Tolkien a reality, the legacy of LOTR remains as big as ever, and indeed there will soon be a live-action Lord of the Rings TV show on Amazon to expand upon that legacy. This year’s Super Bowl will also have a Lord of the Rings moment thanks to a new AT&T Fiber commercial starring Frodo Baggins actor Wood. See the clip in the space below:

In the clip Wood sits down for a Zoom call with various Lord of the Rings fans, and one fan in particular is incredibly excited to be asking the question he’s always wanted to ask, but sadly his internet connection drops at the worst possible moment and he never gets an answer. The clip is simple and straight forward, and indeed is much less elaborate than your average Super Bowl ad. It also happens to be incredibly appropriate to the world of COVID as it features a means of communication more and more people are becoming familiar with.

As for Wood himself, he doesn’t have a lot to do in the ad but be charming, which he naturally pulls off without issue. Overall the commercial is respectful toward Lord of the Rings super-fans, gently poking fun at their ardor rather than outright mocking them, which could be taken as a sign of progress given how sci-fi/fantasy fans are often treated by the wider culture. As Super Bowl commercials go the spot is small and unassuming, but it gets the job done when it comes to pushing the claimed virtues of AT&T Fiber.
