The iconic children’s book series Eloise is being developed for a live-action movie. Originally written in the 1950s by author Kay Thompson, the stories follow Eloise, a young girl living on the top floor of New York City’s Plaza Hotel. The initial Eloise run featured four illustrated books, with drawings by artist Hilary Knight, that followed the girl’s adventures with her pet dog and turtle. Simon & Schuster resurrected the series in the early 2000s and have since published several new Eloise books.

According to Variety, the beloved first book is getting a live-action movie adaptation. The script will be penned by Linda Woolverton, the screenwriter behind classics such as Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King. Woolverton also wrote the screenplays for the live-action adaptations of Alice in Wonderland and both Maleficent films. The movie will be produced by MRC Films (Knives Out) and Handmade Films, which was behind a previous animated Eloise series.

So far, there’s no word on cast or directors. Trudi Francis of Handmade will executive produce. Simon & Schuster, the Thompson estate, and Knight himself will all be involved in addition to MRC and Handmade. Upon the announcement of Woolverton as writer, MRC Film co-presidents Brye Adler and Jonathan Golfman shared their support:

“Linda has helped create some of the most beloved characters of all time. We are honored and beyond excited to be partnering with her; and can’t wait to see her bring all of Eloise’s charm and heart and rascally-ness to life.”

Previously, Eloise has been adapted for the screen in two made-for-TV movies, Eloise at the Plaza and Eloise at Christmastime. Although both featured stars such as Julie Andrews and Christine Baranski, they received only mixed reviews. The aforementioned animated series ran just one season on Starz Kids, and, since then, other adaptations have been discussed but not created. With the backing of Woolverton and Eloise’s creators and publishers, this live-action movie will hopefully do justice to do the iconic character.
