Elvira actress Cassandra Peterson reveals details about her character in Rob Zombie’s The Munsters. Peterson has portrayed the character of Elvira, Mistress of the Dark since 1981, appearing as a late-night horror movie hostess, as well as in numerous guest appearances and feature films. Elvira has since become a cultural icon in the industry, which Peterson has embodied for over 40 years, keeping the persona alive through conventions, guest spots, and merchandising.

Zombie is the acclaimed horror director of such films as House of 1,o00 Corpses, The Devil’s Rejects, and the 2007 Halloween reboot, among others. The director is now adapting the famed TV sitcom The Munsters into a feature film, which follows a family of “monsters” adapting to suburban family life in America. The film stars Jeff Daniel Phillips as Herman Munster, Sheri Moon Zombie as Lily Munster, Daniel Roebuck as Grandpa Munster, Jorge Garcia as Floop, Richard Brake as Dr. Henry Augustus Wolfgang, and former Doctor Who Sylvester McCoy as Igor.

Recently, Zombie announced the casting of Elvira/Peterson in The Munsters and now the actress is sharing some details about her character (via Variety), Barbara Karr. Zombie already revealed that Karr is the “#1 real estate agent in all of Mockingbird Heights” and Peterson has now given more insight into the character, saying, “Here, I am playing this character that’s so so different from what I normally do, I’m playing a super straight character.” Peterson said the departure for her caused mixed emotions, saying, “Barbara is a normal woman, this real estate agent. It was exciting and terrifying, but it was really cool.” It’s unclear if Karr will be on the side of the protagonists in The Munsters or a potential antagonist for the “horrific” family.

Peterson also went on to say that she enjoyed her experience making the film, including the actors portraying the classic characters. “I had the best time with all of the actors that I was working with, and we had so much fun.” Peterson went on to discuss the magnitude of the set design and the reconstruction of the classic sitcom, saying, “The people there, the set, they built the house — oh my god, it was just all magical. It was like ‘The Munsters’ came alive. It was insane.” The Munsters last appeared in live-action for Bryan Fuller’s Mockingbird Lane pilot on NBC, which was not picked up for a series order.

Zombie’s PG-rated version of The Munsters will be the first adaptation since the 2012 pilot and serves as both an on-brand project and a departure for the director. Up to now, Zombie has dealt primarily in hardcore R-rated horror, focusing on the more macabre, violent, and gory aspects, rather than the comical and playful part of the genre. It will be interesting to see what Zombie delivers, with many simply waiting to see how the famed director will be able to to make a film like The Munsters without the hallmarks of his past films. For Peterson, her role in The Munsters is also something of a departure from what audiences expect of her, giving her a chance to play against type while still in the familiar horror genre. Zombie also seems like someone that would have a passion for The Munsters, given the metaphoric elements that mirror his own career, making him potentially the perfect person to adapt the show.
