WARNING: Spoilers for Emily in Paris season 2!

Emily in Paris leaves its season 2 finale on a cliffhanger, but the Netflix series seemingly already spoiled what happens. Netflix’s Emily in Paris ended season 1 with Lily Collins’ Emily Cooper facing a love triangle with Mathieu (Charles Martins) and Gabriel (Lucas Bravo), a local chef and Emily’s neighbor. Emily spent a passionate night with Gabriel, thinking he was leaving Paris, but the chef surprisingly stays in the city after securing backing for his restaurant in the season 1 finale. Complicating the situation more, Emily’s friend Camille (Camille Razat) just got out of a relationship with Gabriel. Emily’s complicated love story continues through the latest season, with Emily confessing her feelings for Gabriel in the season 2 finale and learning that he’s gotten back together with Camille.

In season 2, Emily’s work situation also becomes more complicated. Despite finally fitting in at Savoir, a luxury marketing company in Paris, Emily’s blissful work environment is short-lived. Sylvie Grateau (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu), Chief Marketing Officer for Savoir’s Paris location, doesn’t see eye-to-eye with Madeline Wheeler (Kate Walsh), the Director of Marketing at Gilbert Group, which owns Savoir. Things come to a head in the season 2 finale, and Sylvie quits Savoir, taking the other Paris employees with her. It’s a shock to Emily, who’s suddenly left to help Madeline rebuild the Paris office and make her boss some tea.

The season 2 cliffhanger in Emily in Paris isn’t much of a cliffhanger at all. Sylvie texts Emily for a lunch meeting in the finale and reveals her master plan. She explains she’s sold her shares of her husband’s club in St. Tropez, and she’s starting a new firm with the money. Her Savoir clients are coming with her, and she wants Emily to join the team in the Emily in Paris season 2 finale. Now, Emily faces the decision to either stay her course at Gilbert Group with Madeline and head back to Chicago or remain in France with Sylvie’s company. Adding to the conflict, Emily learns about Gabriel getting back together with Camille, which is more incentive for her to leave. But, with the show being called Emily in Paris, it’s doubtful Emily will go anywhere.

Emily is clearly staying in Paris in season 2. The show is called Emily in Paris for a reason, and one of its main features includes breathtaking shots of Paris streets and French vistas. If the Netflix series were named “Emily in Chicago,” the cliffhanger would have more suspense. However, even when Emily in Paris’s storylines are lackluster, the scenery of France saves the series. Even if part of season 2 takes place in Chicago, it’s doubtful the series will continue without its most significant asset.

Additionally, Emily has little incentive to go back to Chicago. By all accounts, her life there isn’t going anywhere. Madeline keeps leading Emily on with promises of a promotion while also making her do administrative work and brew her tea. The complicated story with Gabriel is a misdirect. After all, Emily in Paris season 1 also ended with Emily having a complicated affair with the chef. Whether she has Gabriel in her life or not, Emily will always have Paris.
