Emmy and Tony-winning actor Hal Holbrook has passed away at his home in Beverly Hills. Holbrook was born in Ohio in 1925 and began acting at the age of 23 in 1948. Before that, Holbrook had served in the United States Army during World War II between the years 1942 and 1946. Upon returning from the war, Holbrook began working in Hollywood.  He garnered acclaim for his portrayal of Mark Twain onstage in Mark Twain Tonight! early in his career. The role earned him a Tony award for his performance, and it also earned him his first Emmy nomination.

After his stint in theatrical productions, Holbrook moved into television and film. He would win multiple Emmy’s for his roles in The Bold OnesPueblo, and Portrait of America. Holbrook has had a long career that has seen him act in everything from iconic films like All The President’s Men, The Fog, Wall Street, and Into the Wild, which earned Holbrook an Academy Award nomination. SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

According to Deadline, Holbrook passed away on January 23. Holbrook was at his home in Beverly Hills when he passed, but no cause of death was given. Holbrook is survived by three children, two step-daughters, two grandchildren, and two step-grandchildren. Holbrook was 95 at the time of his passing.

Holbrook’s passing is just the latest in a long list of celebrities we’ve already lost in 2021. Cicely Tyson, Cloris Leachman, Larry King, Dustin Diamond, and Tanya Roberts all passed in the first few weeks of 2021. Like Tyson and Leachman, Holbrook worked in the industry for decades in smaller roles and as a lead actor. It’s challenging to summarize Holbrook’s career – spanning six decades and an expansive list of films and projects, Holbrook tried his hand in just about everything and pulled it off every time.

Holbrook was awarded the National Humanities Medal in 2003 for his contributions to the art form. However, he hadn’t acted since 2017 after making brief appearances in Grey’s Anatomy, Hawaii Five-O, and Bones. His last film role was in indie thriller Blackway alongside Julia Stiles. Holbrook leaves behind a formidable legacy that will have an impact for years to come. Holbrook also became more politically outspoken in his final years, blasting former President Trump’s many mishaps. Holbrook was laid to rest alongside his wife, Dixie Carter, in Tennessee.
