The planned Empire spinoff centered on Cookie Lyon has been canceled by Fox. Empire’s first season was a ratings hit when it was released in 2015. With her portrayal of Loretha Lyon, better known by the nickname of Cookie, Taraji P. Henson garnered particular acclaim for her performance as the wise and outspoken ex-wife of a hip-hop mogul. After many teases and speculation about a possible continuation of the long-running drama, a spinoff was reported in the works in July. The series would focus on the next chapter of Cookie’s life, with Empire co-creator Danny Strong attached to the project as showrunner alongside Yolanda Lawrence and Stacy Littlejohn.

According to Variety, the spinoff will not be moving forward at Fox. A possible reason for Fox’s decision is that the spinoff would be too costly for the broadcast network. Another complication is that 20th TV, the studio behind Empire, separated from Fox in the wake of the Disney acquisition. The spinoff could still find another home that would remain under the Disney umbrella since it is reportedly being shopped to outlets such as ABC and Hulu.

The news is likely disappointing for fans hoping for Empire to continue in some form, especially since the drama had to end its last season without a proper series finale due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The spinoff would have certainly given closure to lingering storylines while also opening doors for new avenues to be explored. That could still happen if the spinoff ends up on another network or streaming.

But even if that falls through, Strong and co-creator Lee Daniels have been optimistic that a fitting Empire finale could be filmed down the line. While, at the moment, the future of the Fox franchise remains uncertain, it’s good that Empire has more than one potential path forward.
