Disney’s Encanto has been popular since its release with audiences of all ages. The movie touches on a few deep concepts such as generational trauma and family dysfunction that many viewers were able to relate to. This in addition to the extremely catchy music and beautifully designed scenery has made Encanto one of Disney’s instant classics.

If viewers thought the film was good on the first watch, they were pleasantly surprised to discover that there was even more to enjoy on the second or third run-through. These Redditors discovered a few things on these repeated watches that show just how much love and attention the creators put into this game-changing film.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Dolores Covers Her Ears

Dolores has the gift of super hearing and like many of the gifts, it can often be a burden. She is frequently seen struggling with the secrets that she overhears and gives nervous squeaks whenever she has a tidbit that she is struggling not to share. However, the real difficulty seems to come when events around her are too loud.

Redditor Dahyunszn noticed that when the villagers and other family members cheer and applaud at Antonio’s gift ceremony, Dolores covers her ears. This was a thoughtful detail that the creators added to show just how sensitive Dolores is to sound, even when she doesn’t want to be.

Mirabel’s Name

Redditor SpeedyakaLeah noticed that Mirabel’s name sounds a lot like Miracle in English. This could potentially be an early hint to Mirabel’s destiny to save the miracle and teach her family the lessons that they all needed to learn about their own value.

It is also pointed out that Mirabel’s name could come from the Latin word mirabilis, which means wonderous. Since some of Abuela’s first words to Mirabel in the movie are “you are a wonder,” it seems that this addition was intentional, showing that Encanto is not only visually stunning but meticulously thought out as well.

Isabela and Abeula’s Similarities

Isabela is the golden child of the family and the one that receives the most attention from Abuela. She is attractive and Abuela seems to think that she is the best option for having children and carrying on the family miracle.

However, Redditor ToysWereUsPodcast noticed on their second watch-through that Abuela may favor Isabela and Mariano due to their resemblance to a younger version of her and her late husband Pedro. While there are differences, it can’t be denied that they look fairly similar.

Mirabel’s Portrait

Mirabel often feels like the outcast of the family due to her lack of a magical gift. She doesn’t receive a bedroom of her own and has to stay in the family’s nursery, and she does not have a defined role in serving her family and community.

But there may be other reasons that Mirabel doesn’t feel included. User Cyania14 noticed that in the mural of the Madrigal family tree, Mirabel’s portrait is the only one that is not surrounded by flowers. It’s unclear whether Casita created this mural, or if a family member painted it, but it is still sad that Mirabel was so left out.

Abuela Fixes Isabela’s Flowers

As previously stated, Isabela went through the most scrutiny from Abuela. While at first, it appears that she enjoys an elevated position in the family, it eventually becomes clear that Isabela has been miserable under her Abuela’s pressure, always feeling the need to be perfect.

This leads to SparkAxolotl’s observation in the family’s breakfast scene. When Dolores shares that Mariano wants five babies, a nervous Isabela sprouts flowers from her hair. Abuela, who was either oblivious or uncaring to Isabela’s fear, absently removes the only flower of a different color from Isa’s hair, further reinforcing the pressure to be perfect.

Bruno’s Peep Hole

At the beginning of the movie, audiences are led to believe that Bruno had left the family altogether. Later, Mirabel learns that Bruno never went far and was instead living directly in the walls of Casita. In one of Encanto‘s most heartwarming moments, Mirabel sees a small crack in the wall of Bruno’s home that allows him to see out into the family’s kitchen and pretend to be a part of family meals.

On a second watch-through, SparkAxolotl noticed that the creators were so thorough that they made sure to include the crack in all the scenes that show that wall, despite the crack not yet having been noticed by Mirabel. This attention to detail is exactly what has set Encanto apart.

Mirabel’s Jewelry

After their second rewatch, Redditor YamilethB18 asked other users if they had “noticed that all the women that got gifts have earrings made from precious materials while Mirabel only has pompoms?”

This detail could just be due to the fact that Mirabel is crafty and seems to make a lot of her own clothing. However, knowing what audiences know about how Mirabel has been treated, the hand-crafted earrings could instead be a sign that Mirabel was left out yet again. Possibly, the other girls in the family received nice earrings from Abuela upon receiving their gifts, but since Mirabel never received one, she was forced to make some for herself.  This seems to be a real issue discussed in Encanto; it’s easy to unintentionally isolate a family member.

The Characters’ Clothing

The characters in Encanto sport colorful clothing fitting of Colombia. Viewers quickly noticed Mirabel’s personalized skirt, covered in embroidering that she clearly added herself, displaying her creative personality. However, on later views, audiences might have noticed something unique about the other family members’ clothing.

Redditor DisAccIsIncogneto pointed out that each family member has designs on their dresses or shirts that correlate with their gift. Luisa has dumbells, Dolores has sound waves, and Isabela has flowers, to name a few. This also seems to give an explanation to Mirabel’s creative liberties with her skirt. She did not receive personalized clothing based on her gift, so she made her own based on her personality.

Bruno Creeping In The Background

Before anyone finds out that Bruno has been living in the walls, the family and villagers break into Encanto‘s catchiest song, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” in which they all talk about his eerie visions. When Mirabel discovers that Bruno has been nearby all along, it brought up the question of whether he had heard all the things that the family had to say about him.

A detail pointed out by Fangirl_to_the_max shows that he certainly did know, and didn’t seem to mind too much. As Dolores raps her part and dances around a baffled Mirabel, Bruno’s shape can be seen jamming out to her verse on the balcony.

The Family’s Colors

The song “Family Madrigal” is a fast-paced rundown of the entire family tree and the gifts of each member. The first time watching, audiences were busy trying to catch all the information that was being thrown their way, but after a second watch, viewers noticed something else interesting about the Madrigal clothing.

User Vella_hoo_yaar noticed that all of Pepa’s family is dressed in bright colors of yellow and red, while Julieta’s family is all in shades of blue or purple. This color coordination not only helps viewers tell what part of the family the different members belong to but seem to perfectly represent the personalities of Pepa and Julieta.
