Disney’s Encanto gets the Honest Trailer treatment, and it debates whether the Madrigals have gifts… or curses. In just a handful of months, Encanto has become the animated sensation of both 2021 and 2022. Directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, and co-directed by Charise Castro Smith, the movie revolves around the Madrigal family and their magical home. While the casita has bestowed each member of the family with their own special ability, 15-year-old Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz) is the only one to have been inexplicably shunned by the house. And yet, when the casita’s magic starts to fade, it’s only Mirabel who can save the day.

Encanto debuted in November to positive reviews and solid numbers at the box office. As of the time of this writing, it has earned $224 million worldwide; that number is likely to grow, as Disney is sending Encanto back to theaters to celebrate its current success. The movie is also available on Disney+, and it’s because of that streaming availability that Encanto has become such an international sensation. Its soundtrack has become Disney’s most successful in several years, and the film is currently up for several awards, including 3 Oscars.

Since Encanto is so popular right now, it was only a matter of time until Screen Junkies tackled it for its Honest Trailers series. The nearly 7 minute-long video acknowledges the positive aspects of Encanto, but also can’t resist poking fun at everything from the Madrigals’ powers to Abuela’s (María Cecilia Botero) slight villain status. Plus, it features catchy rewrites of “The Family Madrigal”, “Surface Pressure”, and that song we don’t talk about. Check it out below.

Much has been said about the Madrigals’ various gifts, which range from seeing the future to having really incredible hearing. The Honest Trailer takes great pleasure in debating whether each ability actually can be considered a gift, and it makes a solid case for why some of them, like Bruno’s (John Leguizamo) visions of the future, are more like curses. In that sense, perhaps Mirabel actually gets the better deal here, which is something else the Encanto Honest Trailer suggests.

While fans can certainly debate the nitty-gritty of certain aspects of Encanto, there’s no question that it is one of the best Disney movies to arrive in a while, and it has a lot to love. Between its unique story, colorful animation, and delightful soundtrack, Encanto deserves all the love it has been receiving from fans. Though some people could probably do without listening to “Bruno” for a long, long time, there’s still a lot to appreciate about this heartfelt movie. And that is the honest truth.
