Encanto was a very different Disney animated movie. While it followed a similar pattern of many Disney Princess movies, with Mirabel playing the role of the reluctant princess who needs to save her family, the characters in the movie were mostly acting out in fear for most of the movie. In many Disney animated movies, there are people who put on the brave face and then watch it crumble as time passes.

However, in Encanto, while Mirabel played the hero in the movie, almost no one showed bravery until it was too late, despite everyone but Mirabel having magical powers. Luckily, by the end, the characters found their true selves and pulled it back together, but not before they all mostly hid from their problems as the walls came crumbling down.

10 Dolores

The main family member in Encanto that showed the least bravery in the movie was sister Dolores. Out of all the grandchildren, Dolores had the one power that explained why she was not only brave, but also the one who knew the most was wrong in the house.

Dolores had the power to hear everything, and that was a power that caused her a lot of stress and panic. She could hear the mice in the walls, and she knew Bruno was there, she knew something was. When people talked about bad things coming, she heard it all. She dared not speak up, but she also knew danger was coming.

9 Bruno

It would be easy to label Bruno as the least brave member of the Encanto cast of characters for one big reason. He saw the future and it frightened him. He ran away, but he was too scared to really run away and he hid in the walls of their home instead.

However, while this was a sign that he lacked the bravery needed to save his family on his own, he was still there to help Mirabel when she needed him, proving that he had a brave soul. He just needed someone to force him to act on his fears.

8 Pepa

Pepa was the sister that never seemed to have her life together. She was married and had a child, but she never seemed to get control of her emotions. Her power in Encanto was controlling weather. This was mostly shown when a rain cloud appeared over her head when she was upset.

As a result of this, she mostly kept herself out of any conflict. It wasn’t necessarily that she wasn’t brave, but she knew that she didn’t always have the means to deal with drama or danger when it arose.

7 Agustín

Agustin was Mirabel’s father and he was there for both comedy relief and as someone who would support his daughter with all his love. He was mostly comic relief because he was clumsy and prone to injuries, so it was lucky that his wife was the family’s healer.

While he showed a lot of fear through the movie, specifically when dealing with Abuela, he was brave enough to stand up for his daughter when it was needed. He was a good dad, and it was clear he had Mirabel’s back.

6 Julieta

Julieta was Mirabel’s mother and she was the person in the family who could cure and help others. She was also the person who helped hold their portion of the family together. Julieta knew that Abuela looked at Mirabel differently, and she was a good enough mother to stand by her daughter.

She told Mirabel that she was as special as anyone in the family, and when she saw her daughter in pain, she was there to fight for her. Mirabel was brave, and she got it from her mom.

5 Isabela

Isabela was a complicated character. She was Mirabel’s perfect sister, the one who could do no wrong, and the one who was beautiful above all others. However, beauty is only skin deep. While this made Isabela an antagonist through the first part of the movie, things changed.

When the family was in danger, Isabela stood by Mirabel’s side and fought to save their home and protect their family. Once Isabela explained that she just wanted to be normal, Mirabel understood and it allowed her sister to show her true bravery in the face of danger.

4 Luisa

Luisa was expected to be brave and strong. Her power was strength, and she took on the duty to protect her family, do all the deeds that needed muscle power, and to make sure that everyone was safe. However, there was also a part of her that felt like this duty weighed her down.

Luisa wanted to rest, but she knew she couldn’t. She wanted to help Mirabel, but knew that she couldn’t do what needed to be done. She was very brave, but she was also insecure in herself and knew her limitations.

3 Abuela

The entire story arc of Abuela was mired in tragedy. She lost her husband to murderers when she was a new mother to triplets. She then had to build a protective home for her family, and received magic to do so. She then fought for years to keep them protected.

Abuela also made massive mistakes because she was scared. She was scared to lose everything she built and she was fearful to put her family in danger after so many years of safety. However, this fear did not mean she was not brave, as she never could have built this home on her own without being extremely brave. A quote from Encanto that explains Abuela perfectly was when she said, “We must protect our home. We much protect our family.”

2 Antonio

Antonio had one thing going for him that no one else in Encanto did. He was a young child. When he first appeared, he looked up to Mirabel and she knew what he was going through. He was supposed to find his power, but he was scared that he wouldn’t get it, like Mirabel failed to do.

However, not only was Antonio brave enough to go for it anyway, but once he walked through the door, every fear in his body was gone. He could talk to animals and he ran free. He was there to help Mirabel when he learned about Bruno. He stood and fought when his older aunts were scared to life a finger.

1 Mirabel

Mirabel was the bravest character in Encanto, by a long shot. While her grandmother, Abuela, was scared to take a wrong step, Mirabel was willing to break all the rules to save her family. She ventured into the walls to find Bruno and then she ultimately convinced him to help her fight.

She stood up to her sister Isabela and forced her to accept who she really was and then fought her to help break down the wall that built up between them. Mirabel fought until her entire home came crumbling down and then she was there to help build it back.
