In Encanto, Bruno often has devastating visions, and there’s a reason the character constantly predicts doom and gloom. Uncle Bruno (John Leguizamo) is one of the most misunderstood characters in the Family Madrigal. The character is the only Madrigal family member who can predict the future, but his vision’s often lead to dire consequences. For instance, Bruno’s prediction of rain on his sister Pepa’s (Carolina Gaitán) wedding day led to a hurricane since Pepa controls the weather. Then, after Bruno has a vision of his niece Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz) possibly destroying their magical house, he goes into hiding to protect her.

Like Bruno, Mirabel is an outcast in the family. While Mirabel’s sisters, Luisa (Jessica Darrow) and Isabela (Diane Guerrero), both have magical gifts, Mirabel doesn’t get any special powers on her ceremony day in Casita. Instead, the magic door that’s supposed to lead Mirabel to her gift simply disappears. The lack of gifts strains Mirabel’s relationship with her Abuela Alma (Maria Cecilia Botero). Alma worries about the Madrigals losing their magical gifts, so she doesn’t initially give Mirabel the respect and love she deserves.

Bruno often has dark and devastating visions in Encanto, and there’s a reason for it. The song “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” sums up many of Bruno’s sad visions. In addition to predicting rain on Pepa’s wedding day, he had visions of people losing their hair, growing heavier, and that a pet fish would die. However, according to a theory (via Reddit), Bruno’s visions were meant to help people overcome obstacles. For instance, if he hadn’t predicted Mirabel causing Casita to crack, she may have never gone on the path to repair the house and the family.

As further evidence for the theory, Bruno’s predictions aren’t set in stone. When Mirabel discovers Bruno is living in the house’s walls, he tells her that her future isn’t set. “There was no one answer,” he tells Mirabel. But truly, this is the same for many of his predictions. For instance, when he tells Dolores (Adassa) that the man of her dreams is betrothed to another, that future changes. Dolores ends up with Mariano (Maluma) in the end. Bruno’s predictions more accurately show possible futures, and people often have the power to change them.

At the very least, Bruno’s visions help his family take the initiative. For instance, Bruno’s prediction that Diane Guerrero’s Isabela Madrigal would have the life she always wanted could seem like an empty promise to his niece. After all, in the film, she’s betrothed to Mariano despite not wanting to marry him. However, the prediction that Isabela could have the life she wanted gave her hope. She eventually gets her dream life when she decides to give up being perfect. Similarly, though the prediction that Mirabel was behind the Casita cracking could’ve been devastating, it also fueled Mirabel to discover the way to fix the problems in Encanto.
