The director of Disney’s latest animated film, Encanto, is hinting that Dolores may not be as innocent as she first appears. Thanks to the intriguing storytelling, beautiful art, and captivating songs, Encanto has already established itself as one of the more memorable Disney flicks. The plot concentrates on the Madrigal family, who are given a miraculous refuge and powers after narrowly escaping their violent pursuers.

Each person born to the Madrigal family, with the exception of Mirabel, is bestowed a magical talent by the Miracle Candle. For example, Dolores was given enhanced hearing that allows her to hear almost any sound from a distance. She is portrayed as a quiet and likable character that is troubled by the fact that the man of her dreams, Mariano, plans to marry her perfect cousin Isabela. Dolores essentially hears all that is going on with the family and often uses the information to counsel others, going so far as to even give the family insight into Mariano’s proposal plans.

However, Dolores may not be as altruistic as she seems according to a post by the film’s director, Jared Bush. During an Encanto watch party, Bush addressed a viewer’s suspicions that Dolores was feeding the Madrigal family false information for her own benefit. The fan theory is based on Dolores’s facial expression when she reveals that Mariano is planning to propose and would like to have five children. According to Bush, Dolores did, in fact, make up the five babies portion to mess with Isabela. He stated that the evidence proving Dolores fabricated the comment is seen in her subtle side-glance. It is important to note that his affirmation was also accompanied by a laughing emoji, leaving the comment open for continued debate. Did Bush actually confirm the theory or did he merely find it amusing? There is no other indication that Dolores uses the advantage of her hearing to manipulate the truth but it also isn’t too farfetched either.

The short clip does seem convincing but Dolores’s expression immediately transforms to one of sadness in the full scene, suggesting she longs to have that life with Mariano and is most likely just jealous. Then again, it is possible she felt that way and still made up the portion about the babies to sully the budding romance. Dolores is in a perfect position to do so as only she has the inside scoop and could mix it with a bit of truth to become believable. Thanks to Bush’s comments, Encanto fanatics are now left wondering whether Dolores was actually responsible for Isabela’s lack of feelings toward Mariano or if fate just happened to fall in her favor.
