An Avengers: Endgame deleted scene shows the team’s huddle in the trench. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, the 2019 Marvel Studios movie marked the end of the lengthy Infinity Saga. It remains to be the longest MCU film to date with a runtime of just over three hours, featuring an epic final third act battle that brought together heroes from across the MCU. And yet, Avengers: Endgame still had a string of sequences that were left on the editing room floor.

Following Thanos’ (Josh Brolin) devastating Snap in Avengers: Infinity War, the surviving Avengers went their separate ways and spent the next five years differently. However, when Ant-Man re-emerged and the idea for the “Time Heist” came up, the heroes eventually banded back together in the hopes of bringing back those who were affected by the Decimation. The mission was a success, but before the Avengers could even process the victory in their endeavor, Thanos from 2014 ambushed them. Luckily, Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.). Thor (Chris Hemsworth), and Captain America (Chris Evans) got some backup in time to fight the Mad Titan’s army.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The final action set piece of Avengers: Endgame was massive in scale. It featured nearly all active heroes in the franchise battling Thanos and his many minions. It also had a lot of memorable character moments — from Steve Rogers finally lifting Mjölnir, to Tony Stark’s reunion with Spider-Man (Tom Holland). However, there were also several sequences that were cut from it, including a trench huddle that can be seen in a clip recently released by Marvel on the Disney+ service. The scene features several of the heroes, including Cap, Spider-Man, Thor, Black Panther and Valkyrie, planning an attack against Thanos’ army. According to the Russos, this particular Avengers: Endgame scene was cut because it slowed down the pacing of the whole third act sequence. Following the return of the heroes who perished from Thanos’ Snap five years earlier, the whole battle sequence had been action-packed. All this talking, with certain characters standing idly at the back, would’ve bogged down the movie. So, while it would’ve been a treat seeing all of these characters trapped in the trench and discussing their next move to get the completed Infinity Gauntlet away from the Mad Titan, the filmmakers decided to get rid of it. As seen in this video, the whole scene didn’t even have completed VFX work, suggesting that they opted to scrap it early on.

Overall, the Russo brothers have been able to justify cutting most Avengers: Endgame deleted scenes. As interesting as most of the sequences were, they either slowed down the film or didn’t serve the Marvel movie’s story by adding to what was an already lengthy runtime. However, despite it being cut, just seeing all these iconic MCU actors together in this deleted trench moment is fascinating, and an example of the kind of well-executed ensemble scenes that made Avengers: Endgame so entertaining.
