Red Skull actor Ross Marquand pitches an Avengers: Endgame spinoff that centers on Captain America’s (Chris Evans) final mission to return the Infinity Stones at the end of the movie. Introduced in Captain America: The First Avenger, Johann Schmidt is a former head of HYDRA and is Steve Rogers’ first primary antagonist who turned into the Red Skull after taking an imperfect version of the Super Soldier serum. The character was previously played by Hugo Weaving, however, Marquand took over the role for his appearance in Avengers: Infinity War and its sequel.

After his appearance in The First Avenger, Red Skull’s whereabouts were unknown following his attempt to wield the Space Stone, then known simply as the Tesseract. Fans eventually learned what happened to him when he reemerged in Infinity War as the keeper of the Soul Stone on Vormir. At the end of Endgame, Steve was tasked with returning all the Infinity Stones they gathered from the time heist so as not to create any alternate timelines. That means he was reunited with his old nemesis – something that has yet to be shown on on camera. If Marvel Studios is interested, however, Marquand has an idea about how they can show this and the rest of Captain America’s last mission to fans.

Making a virtual appearance at Awesome Con Online, Marquand was asked about the chances of Red Skull returning in the MCU. While the actor maintained he has no idea if this is a possibility, he floated some suggestions as to how he can make another appearance. He then revealed what he’s interested to see is an Endgame spinoff of Captain America returning all six Infinity Stones before living a full life with Peggy (Hayley Atwell). Marquand also discussed Red Skull reuniting with the Super Soldier in this proposed offshoot.

[When] he jumps into the time machine at the end of Endgame, he’s gone for a second and then comes back as an old man. But I think it would be really interesting to see what happens each time he returns those stones. And that would be a fascinating movie in and of itself, I think. I hope [Red Skull] does [return]. I don’t know if they have any bad blood anymore. Cap probably does, but I think Red Skull is cursed with infinite knowledge, so he might not care about revenge at all. I hope he comes back, we’ll see. Fingers crossed.

This idea for an MCU project isn’t exactly new, as fans have suggested it since Endgame hit theaters. Aside from seeing Captain America returning the Infinity Stones, many are also interested in learning about his adventures with Peggy. Admittedly, how the whole ending for Steve worked is still murky with lingering questions about whether his decision to reunite with his lover created an alternate timeline or not. An offshoot could effectively clarify that, not to mention also reveal what his reunion with Red Skull would’ve looked like when he needed to return the Soul Stone on Vormir.

As cool as it would be seeing Captain America accomplishing his final mission before officially retiring in Avengers: Endgame, the chances of this happening are slim. At this point, Marvel Studios’ priority is to transition to Phase 4. Bringing back Captain America in this phase would be counter-productive. All that being said, if they really want to do something similar to this, they don’t need a spinoff film, they can simply position it as a Disney+ project.
