Speaking at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, the writers of Avengers: Endgame have confirmed that Gamora survived Tony Stark’s snap. Gamora’s fate was one of the greatest mysteries of Avengers: Endgame; the past version of Gamora traveled from 2014 to the present day with her father Thanos, only to betray him and side with the Avengers. But the climax of Avengers: Endgame left viewers wondering whether she was still alive or not when the dust had settled from the final battle.

Gamora disappeared at the end of the final battle, which saw Tony Stark use the unlimited power of the Infinity Gauntlet to snap Thanos and his army out of existence. It was difficult to say what Stark had willed the Infinity Stones to do, and it was also unclear how much control he had over them in the first place. Many viewers speculated that Gamora was killed along with her father.

Speaking at their “Writing Avengers: Endgame” panel at SDCC 2019 (via: Vanity Fair), screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have confirmed that Gamora survived Tony Stark’s snap. As far as they’re concerned, Gamora simply slipped away, and they expect her storyline to continue in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

It’s important to remember that the alternate-reality Gamora had next to no emotional bonds to the triumphant heroes. She had been removed from her timeline before she’d ever had the chance to meet Peter Quill and work with the Guardians of the Galaxy against Ronan the Accuser; and the only one she has an emotional connection with is Nebula. Even that is a strange and uncomfortable tie, given she has no memories of being the kind of sister Nebula swore she became. As a result, it’s perfectly in-character for Gamora to sneak away. She’d probably be able to slip off-world with relative ease, either stealing a Ravager spaceship or sneaking through a portal when the Masters of the Mystic Arts sent the Ravagers back.

It’s true that Markus and McFeely won’t be in the know about the MCU’s future direction. Indeed, when asked another question, they admitted they don’t know what Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has planned. But Gamora’s fate is most likely an exception, as they actually worked with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 writer-director James Gunn himself on the scripts of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Gunn actually wrote the dialogue for the Guardians himself so as to ensure they stayed in character. So, in this case, it’s safe to assume Markus and McFeely know what they’re talking about – and that they’ve just given an audience at Comic-Con 2019 an unexpected insight into Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
