WarningTaarna: The Last Taarakian is a MATURE series!

Since her debut in the 1981 film fittingly titled, Heavy Metal, Taarna, the Last Taarakian has been something of an unexpected icon due to her high fantasy leanings, bold sexuality and incredible godlike power. Now, as her newest landmark series together into trade paperback format, Screen Rant is proud to present an exclusive reveal of the trailer for Taarna: The Last Taarakian, courtesy of Heavy Metal Magazine. Feel the exhilaration of the fight as Taarna wages war against the forces of evil, using the universal power of a goddess of justice.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

A bit of a retelling of the original Heavy Metal film, Taarna features the skillful Stephanie Phillips on writing duties pulling together a plot for the ages as the wicked warlord Urcuss, corrupted by the foul God of Chaos Kako, sweeps across the alien planet of Sumuul slaughtering all in his path. This visually impressive comic features a kaleidoscope of talented artists on penciling duties, including Patrick Zircher, Al Barrionuevo and Christian Rosado. In a manner slightly different than its predecessor series, Taarna manages to finely weave together a parable of religion, violence, war, death, beauty, hate and love with nary a seam showing. Crashing like the thunder of a thousand storms, Phillips writes her heroine as both a goddess and a woman.

Of the release, Executive Editor Joe Illidge waxed rhapsodic on Phillips and company’s remarkable story-crafting in their take on the character, saying, “Establishing the most iconic version of Taarna in this era of Heavy Metal required a trio of distinctive artists to realize Stephanie’s script to the fullest. Stephanie’s story shows us the dichotomies of Taarna. She’s a distant cosmic entity, yet capable of experiencing empathy. Millions of years old, and still learning about the vast universe she governs.” Check out this exclusive trailer for the story below by Taka Studios and Eye Cabal, which will no doubt evoke the tradename of Taarna’s publisher in its overall radness:

In an earlier interview with Screen Rant, Phillips commented that she enjoyed the character because, despite Taarna’s incredible power, the true strength of her character comes from her ability to come back from the brink of failure, even when hopelessly weak. “Whenever I get handed a character that seems to have unlimited power, my instinct seems to be ‘how can they fail?’” Phillips said. “’What can we do to test that? What can we do to see something that makes them more relatable?’ because I don’t think it’s this immunity or extreme strength that makes the character interesting.

For those looking for a psychedelic romp featuring a dashing goddess riding a giant avian creature fighting chaos gods, demon-possessed warlords and dragons all while armed with a magical sword, pick up the Taarna: The Last Taarakian trade paperback, on sale January 18 wherever comic books are sold.
