Eric Andre reveals a stunt he did with John Cena led to a concussion. Andre is a well-known comedian and creator of Adult Swim’s The Eric Andre Show, which he hosts with Hannibal Buress. The show is a parody take on public-access series. It features a blend of wacky celebrity interviews and sketches, as well as other elements.  The Eric Andre Show premiered in 2012. There have been four seasons and two specials so far, with the most recent special airing in February 2018. However, season 4 of the show concluded back in 2016, making for a long wait between seasons. Viewers have been eagerly anticipating new episodes for some time now.

The Eric Andre Show season 5 premieres this weekend, with the October 25 date announced last month. Like past seasons, it will have 10 episodes. The show has become synonymous with celebrity appearances, and they’ll be no shortage of them in season 5; Judy Greer, Luis Guzman, Blake Griffin, Adam Rippon, Dermot Mulroney, Omarion, Jai Rodriguez, Tia Carrere, and Robin Givens are all slated to appear. A trailer for the upcoming season debuted a few weeks ago and teased the stunt with Cena, though he wasn’t visible in the clip.

Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! this week, Andre discussed the stunt, which has Cena throwing him into a bookcase. Andre revealed he got a concussion while filming it but shared it wasn’t Cena’s fault:

John Cena did the stunt right, but we prepped for the stunt wrong. That metal shelf came over and clocked me in the head, and I got concussed and I went to the hospital.

Andre makes light of the incident in his interview, but his injury does highlight the dangerous nature of stunt work. Even when the set is prepared correctly, issues can still arise. It’s a problem Hollywood is working to combat. Even with protocols and safety standards in place, unfortunate accidents still happen. However, it helps when actors and stunt performers are vocal about issues that arise during filming, as it makes others more aware of the problem. This in turn helps motivate those working in the entertainment industry to find a solution.

Though the incident sounds painful, it doesn’t seem like Andre regrets doing the stunt with Cena, especially since it wasn’t the actor’s fault. It will be exciting to see Cena on the show, especially as his star has risen in the past several years. He’s become an impressive comedian in his own right, and his comedic style should pair well with Andre’s. However, viewers will have to wait for The Eric Andre Show‘s season 5 premiere to see the two in action.
