Eternals 2 or 3 would have to include Thanos, according to screenwriter Kaz Firpo. The latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes from the minds of cousins Kaz and Ryan Firpo, along with Patrick Burleigh and the film’s Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao, who all contributed to the script. Similar to 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Eternals debuts a brand new lineup of heroes for the MCU. They are portrayed by Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lia McHugh, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Salma Hayek, and Angelina Jolie.

While Eternals doesn’t feature the Mad Titan since it is set after he met his demise in Avengers: Endgame, it does introduce his brother, Eros, portrayed by the former One Direction member and Dunkirk star Harry Styles. In a momentous mid-credits scene, the Eternal also known as Starfox presents himself to Thena (Jolie), Makkari (Ridloff), and Druig (Keoghan) and offers his assistance. Throughout the film, the increasingly powerful Deviant Kro (voiced by Bill Skarsgård) acts as the primary villain, although the Celestial Arishem turns out to be quite antagonistic as well.

In an interview with The Direct, Eternals writer Kaz Firpo seemed quite positive that if a sequel or a threequel ever comes to fruition, Josh Brolin’s Thanos would have to be involved in some capacity. Firpo went as far as to say there is “no way” to make sequels to Eternals without including Brolin’s iconic villain. Read what he had to say below:

I believe that there is no way that you can do Eternals 2 and 3 without somehow touching on Mr. Brolin.

Now that the Mad Titan’s kin has been introduced to the MCU and appears to be a protagonist, one would assume Thanos would have to factor into Eros’ storyline at some point in the future. Given his death in Endgame, this would likely be in the form of flashbacks to their time together on their homeworld Titan, which could illuminate how the two brothers turned out so differently in terms of their appearance and motives.

While flashbacks would be the likeliest explanation for how Thanos could return in Eternals2 or 3, it certainly wouldn’t be the first time a character in the MCU returned from the dead whether it be through time travel or other methods. Thanos was already killed in Endgame twice, so it wouldn’t be out of the question that he finds a way to return and meet his demise once more. Fans will have to wait a while though to see their favorite villain on screen again, as Eternals is still only on in its theatrical run.
