Eternals will introduce the audience to Makkari, another superhero with superhuman speed, and her abilities can highlight how slow the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s version of Quicksilver was in Avengers: Age of Ultron. The MCU continues its expansion now that the Infinity Saga came to an end, and its highly-anticipated Phase 4 has finally begun. This new wave covers TV shows and movies, and on the latter’s side, the MCU will introduce a very interesting group of superheroes in Eternals, directed by Chloé Zhao.

The Eternals are a team of an immortal alien race created by the Celestials and who have been secretly living on Earth for thousands of years. The Eternals have guided humanity and done their best to not interfere with big events so they won’t be discovered, which explains why they didn’t do anything when Thanos’ snap happened. Eternals, then, will explore the team’s backstory and see its members reuniting to protect humanity from the Deviants, their evil counterparts. Starring as the Eternals are Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Kumail Nanjiani, Brian Tyree Henry, Lia McHugh, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, and Lauren Ridloff, and the latter’s character can show how a deceased hero wasn’t as fast as everyone believed.

Lauren Ridloff will play Makkari, a character who has been changed for the big screen as in the comics it’s a male superhero formerly known as Hurricane and Mercury. The MCU’s version of Makkari is a woman of color and also the first deaf superhero in this universe, but aside from that, it looks like she will keep the same powers and abilities as her comic book counterpart. Makkari possesses superhuman strength, reflexes, and speed, this last one allowing her to create cyclones by running in circles, run up walls, and even run across water. In the comics, speed is Makkari’s prime power, and he chose to focus most of his body’s Cosmic Energy on enhancing his running speed. Makkari is the second hero in the MCU with the power of superspeed, and through her, this universe can show how slow Quicksilver actually was.

Pietro Maximoff a.k.a. Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) was introduced in Avengers: Age of Ultron alongside his twin sister, Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), but he didn’t stay in the MCU for long. Quicksilver died during the Battle of Sokovia in Age of Ultron when Hawkeye was saving a kid and was about to get shot by Ultron, so he did his best to shield Barton with a car, but he was shot multiple times. Quicksilver’s death has been heavily criticized as viewers don’t believe he could have been so slow as to get hit by the bullets. Now, Makkari and Quicksilver have similar speed powers, though from different sources, but Makkari’s are superior as they are linked to cosmic energy. Through her superhuman speed, then, the MCU can show that Quicksilver was in fact not as fast as believed, and thus his death in Age of Ultron wasn’t that out of place.

The Eternals’ arrival at the MCU will change this universe and what viewers thought they knew about it, and through them, the MCU can also explain some of its biggest mysteries and answer many fan questions, such as the one about Quicksilver, his superhuman speed, and his death. Of course, more exciting than that is the introduction of a deaf superhero, showing that Marvel is finally leaning towards a more inclusive universe.
