Patton Oswalt did motion capture for Pip the Troll during Eternals‘ credits scene. The stand-up comedian and actor makes his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in the film as the voice of Pip the Troll, the sidekick to Eros/Starfox (Harry Styles), the brother of Thanos who makes a surprise appearance during a mid-credits scene. However, much of the Marvel movie focuses on its titular team of superheroes played by Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lia McHugh, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Salma Hayek, and Angelina Jolie.

The latest MCU film hails from the Oscar-winning filmmaker for Nomadland, Chloé Zhao. After being touched on briefly in past films, Eternals puts the race of synthetic beings front and center, exploring much of their ancient backstory. After being created by the Celestial Arishem, the ten Eternals were sent to Earth during the Stone Age to eliminate the invasive threat known as the Deviants. After they reemerge thousands of years later with newfound power, the Eternals must reunite to defeat their foes yet again. While the film debuted in theaters earlier this month, the cast is still revealing secrets from behind the scenes.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

During a discussion with Comicbook, Eternals‘ visual effects supervisor Matt Aitken reveals that Oswalt not only voiced Pip the Troll but was actually on set to deliver a motion-capture performance. Aitken also reveals that Oswalt did the scene on his knees, giving the VFX team just the right reference height for Pip. Read what Aitken had to say below:

We ended up replacing Patton Oswalt with Pip and the corridor, because we needed to do all that interactive portal light and extend it. But if you’re looking at Eros, then his face will definitely be the face, but everything else is CG in those shots. He’s there on his knees to get his head in the right height. But yeah, no he was there. He’s fantastic. He’s just great.

The famous comedian previously created the animated Marvel show for Hulu, MODOK, in which he voices the titular character. Though Oswalt expressed interest in bringing MODOK to the live-action realm of the MCU, no one likely expected him to voice an entirely different character in Eternals. During the credits scene, Pip pops out of a portal and ceremoniously introduces Eros, most of which was created using CGI, though it is now known that Oswalt and Styles were both on set together.

Oswalt certainly isn’t the first MCU actor to deliver a motion-capture performance, with Josh Brolin’s Thanos and Mark Ruffalo’s Smart Hulk being two of the most famous examples. Pip might not have as big of a role in the MCU moving forward, as his fate seems irrevocably tied to that of Eros. Though given Pip’s connection to Adam Warlock in the comics, an appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 could be possible. For those who haven’t yet seen Pip’s MCU debut, Eternals is still showing in theaters.
