Eternals could reveal the true origins of Captain America’s first shield. Before he received his signature Vibranium shield from Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper), Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) sported an entirely different one in Captain America: The First Avenger. That version of the weapon was spotted in the background of the first Eternals trailer released back in May, 2021, and since then, it has become an interesting topic of conversation among fans.

Just two months since the release of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Marvel Studios is premiering another blockbuster with Eternals. Directed by Academy Award-winner Chloé Zhao, it will debut a brand new superhero team known as the Eternals, who were created by the Celestials and sent to Earth thousands of years ago to protect humanity from the Deviants. Boasting a star-studded cast and taking place in both past and present, the Marvel movie is expected to reference the larger MCU to establish their presence throughout its history, and many are wondering what kinds of Easter Eggs might make an appearance.

Among the interesting details in Eternals is the inclusion of what appears to be Captain America’s original shield, spotted in the background while Sprite (Lia McHugh) seems to be performing a song-and-dance number. As part of a press visit to the film’s set attended by SR in January, 2020, property master Craig Price was asked about the matter, and instead of playing coy, he straightforwardly said that “it would be inappropriate to comment.” Instead, he moved forward and focused on other fascinating props in the film, including some of Phastos’ (Brian Tyree Henry) creations.

Since there’s no context to the aforementioned trailer scene, it’s difficult to predict why Captain America’s first shield is seemingly in the background. It’s worth noting, however, that it seems to take place on a private plane, which could belong to the Eternal and massive Bollywood star Kingo (Kumail Nanjiani). What’s impossible to distinguish, however, is whether the shield is a replica, rather than the actual one from Steve’s USO tour. Assuming that it’s the former, it could easily be a prop from one of Kingo’s films. If it’s the latter, however, fans will be wanting to know how it came into his possession.

Since the Eternals have been silent observers on Earth for centuries, they will probably have followed Captain America’s career – in fact, the shield isn’t the only reference to the Star-Spangled Avenger in Eternals. There’s a conversation among the heroes discussing who would lead Earth’s Mightiest Heroes now that Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Captain Rogers are no longer around. Aside from these, it’s not outside the realm of possibility that there are more Steve Rogers-related Easter eggs in the blockbuster.
