With a fifth Avengers film virtually inevitable, the next iteration of the superhero team will need a leader, and Eternals set up Sersi as the perfect contender. 2012’s The Avengers introduced the famous team of heroes that would continue to grow its roster as the MCU movie franchise progressed. The MCU’s first three phases, now known as The Infinity Saga, concluded with the Avengers’ original six members moving on from their roles either through death, retirement, or joining a different team. While there are other fitting choices for a new Avengers leader, Eternals proves that Sersi is the best one.

The status of the Avengers is unknown following the events of Avengers: Endgame. This is jokingly acknowledged in Spider-Man: Far From Home via Betty Brant’s school news broadcast and Talos asking Nick Fury how to answer peoples’ Avengers-relation inquiries. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings implies that The Avengers exist in some form in its post-credits scene, which has Wong, Captain Marvel, and Bruce Banner debrief Shang-Chi. The team will need to reassemble sooner or later, and the role of the leader will need to be filled by a new hero.

Eternals introduces the titular team of Celestial-created protectors whose supposed purpose is to protect Earth from Deviants. The team eventually learns that their purpose is to cultivate life on Earth for its eventual destruction, as it nurtures a new Celestial in a process called the Emergence. Having developed an affection for Earth’s human population, many of the Eternals disobeyed their directive, saving the planet from destruction. Sersi, who became the Eternals’ de facto leader after the death of Ajak, would ideally lead the next iteration of the Avengers due to her experience, powers, and altruism.

Steve Rogers was the original leader of the Avengers, having led the Howling Commandos (also known as the Invaders) in World War II and proving to be one of the few beings other than Thor to be worthy of wielding Mjolnir. Rogers had superhuman strength and was one of the MCU’s best hand-to-hand fighters, but it was his keen tactical mind and impeccable moral compass that solidified him as the Avengers’ true leader. Of all the potential leaders following Endgame, Sersi is the most fitting choice to fill in Rogers’ role.

As an Eternal, Sersi is older than humanity itself, having protected Earth and lived among humans for most of the species’ history. Her Celestial-given cosmic power makes her one of the most powerful beings in the MCU, and she specializes in matter transmutation, an extremely potent ability to transform materials instantly. Sersi also matches Rogers’ altruism, feeling so protective of humanity that she disobeyed her intrinsic purpose of facilitating the Emergence, preserving the Earth, and preventing the birth of a Celestial (whose species created her) in the process.

Sersi was kidnapped by Arishem the Judge (the prime Celestial) at the end of Eternals, and while her status is unrevealed, it’s all but guaranteed that she’ll return in a future MCU property. With the Celestials, Kang the Conqueror, and multiversal threats on the horizon, the Avengers will inevitably assemble once more in a fifth film. Their new roster remains to be seen, but Eternals sets up Sersi as the best possible successor to Steve Rogers as the Avengers’ new leader.
