Many people argue that Rue and Jules are one of the best couples in Euphoria, but as season 2 premieres, fans are beginning to look back on their relationship and question whether the couple is truly a good fit. Throughout the first season, the special episodes that focused solely on Jules and Rue, and the first episode of the second season, there are many quotes that suggest that Jules might not be good for Rue after all.

Whether it’s the fact that Jules puts a lot of pressure on Rue in their relationship or that her tendency to fall in love quickly may leave Rue hurt, there are a lot of quotes in Euphoria that suggest the couple simply aren’t a good fit for each other.

Bathroom Stall Conversations

“Why Don’t You Kiss Me?”

At the end of the first season, Jules asks Rue in the bathroom stall why she doesn’t kiss her. To which Rue rightfully responds, “I kiss you,” but Jules goes on to say that she doesn’t “kiss her, kiss her,” suggesting that what she’s doing isn’t enough. This quote highlights that Jules is bad for Rue because she puts all of the work onto Rue, she expects her to kiss her when she’s perfectly capable of kissing Rue in the way she wants herself.

This may seem like not a big deal, but the question remains, how would this idea manifest in their relationship? Will Jules continue to expect Rue to make all the first moves and do everything for her? Putting this kind of pressure on Rue isn’t a very healthy or balanced way to go about things.

When Talking to Her Therapist

“I Feel Like Her Sobriety Is Completely Dependent On How Available I Am To Her.”

Even though this sentiment is true based on the way Rue behaves, the fact that Jules encourages Rue to depend on her for her sobriety is a major red flag in their relationship. Even though Jules does test this theory when she leaves her at the train station, causing Rue’s relapse, she never really confronts Rue about this.

One of the most important things in a relationship, to make it work, is patience and communication, but rather than talking to Rue about how she feels surrounding her dependency on her for her sobriety, she talks about it to other people. This, isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it’s important for Jules to have those tough conversations with Rue if she really wants to make it work.

When Talking to Her Therapist (Part 2)

“Rue Was The First Girl Who Didn’t Just Look At Me.”

This quote is from Jules’ special episode between the first and second season of Euphoria when she’s talking to her therapist. There isn’t anything inherently wrong with what Jules’ says here, it’s more so the implications of it that are a problem.

This quote proves that Jules didn’t notice Rue for Rue, but because Rue saw her (and was the first person to really see her for who she is). And this is a problem because, this quote suggests that Rue is more of an object to Jules that makes her feel good about herself, which isn’t a good foundation for a relationship.

When Rue Says “I’ve Got An Idea”

“Should I Be Concerned?”

In response to Rue saying to Jules, “I’ve got an idea,” Jules instantly shoots back, “should I be concerned?” Although on the surface this is a light-hearted joke, there are implications that hide beneath it.

Why does Jules immediately think something bad when Rue says she has an idea? This shows that Jules doesn’t trust nor does she give the benefit of doubt to Rue in any situation, and it’s not something that is an amazing quality in a significant other. This is just another reason why Jules is bad for Rue.

On Being Trans

“In My Head, It’s Like If I Can Conquer Men, Then I Can Conquer Femininity.”

Jules has the most tragic backstory in Euphoria, and this is explored in her special episode. One of the most interesting conversations in this episode is when she talks to her therapist about being trans. One of the best things about Jules’ character in the series is that they don’t make being trans her whole personality, it’s more about who she is as a person and she just so happens to be trans.

That being said, when Jules talks about her femininity, it’s always tied in with how she views and is perceived by men. One thing she definitely needs to do is rewire the heteronormative thought process that she has on femininity, but it also proves that she might not be done with her romantic connections with men in the show, making Rue vulnerable to getting hurt again by Jules. So, the question remains, does Jules need a man to make her feel like a woman, or is Rue good enough?

Dressing Rue The Way She Dresses

“I Liked The Way I Dressed You, But I’m Worried I F***** With Your Gender Expression.”

A key moment in one of the first episodes in the first season of Euphoria is when Jules dresses Rue for a party in her clothes. Rue is visibly uncomfortable and eventually changes back into her original clothes for the party.

The issue with this is that it appears as though Jules wants to change Rue. She knows that dressing Rue in a dress will make her uncomfortable because she never wears them, and yet, she does it anyway.

A Tender Confession

“I Hate Everyone Else In This World But You.”

Jules may be one of Euphoria‘s most likable characters but that doesn’t mean she isn’t without her flaws and contradictions. One of the things that Jules says about Rue is that she puts too much dependency on her for her own happiness and sobriety, but Jules does the exact same thing in return. Especially in season 1, Jules hyper-fixates on Rue and makes her the sun in her world: everything revolves around her.

There clearly is a co-dependency issue going on here, but at least Rue can be honest about it. This co-dependency must be resolved in order for their relationship to work, otherwise, Jules will always be bad for Rue.

While At The Club

“Tequila Makes Me Want To Dance.”

Jules often acts like Euphoria‘s main character, and this is exemplified by her actions and behaviors. While Jules is away visiting friends, she hooks up with someone else even though she has a thing going with Rue. And although there’s nothing wrong with Jules partying without Rue, it’s important to note that this is essentially her cheating on Rue as she hooks up with another girl.

Who’s to say that this won’t happen again now that Jules and Rue are (sort of) back together as of the season 2 premiere. Will there be a repeat of the first season, or will Jules get it together and prove that she’s dedicated and loyal to Rue?

When Talking To Her Therapist (Part 3)

“I Fall In Love So Easily. I Really Do. It’s, Like, Almost Embarrassing.”

Another memorable quote from the Jules episode is, “I fall in love so easily. I really do. It’s, like, almost embarrassing.” This isn’t inherently a bad thing, because Rue does too, but this suggests that there could be another moment in season 2 where Jules leaves Rue again, but this time for someone else.

When Jules openly admits to falling in love “so easily,” it’s easy to question if her feelings for Rue are really real, and whether she may just run off with someone else and leave Rue hurt yet again.

Bathroom Stall Conversations (Part 2)

“I Want You To Wanna Kiss Me So Bad That You Don’t Even Ask.”

This moment, where Jules clarifies how she wants Rue to kiss her, is another where Jules is putting all of the pressure and responsibility onto Rue to make their relationship what she wants. It begs the question, why can’t she take some initiative and make the changes she wants to see in their relationship?

This also is a moment that could potentially be confusing for Rue because all Rue was trying to do was respect Jules’ choice and ask for consent. Jules often expects Rue to read her mind and figure these important things out for herself. This quote, along with many others from Jules, proves that she isn’t actually good for Rue and may actually be quite bad for her.
