In a tell-all interview with the other mothers of Euphoria, Paula Marshall, the actress behind Marsha Jacobs, shuts down theories of Ashtray being the long-lost Jacobs son. Based on the short-lived Israeli series of the same name, the HBO original show premiered in June 2019 to immense acclaim from both critics and fans alike who praised the approach the series took towards its tough subject matter, the performances of the cast, and the writing. Euphoria season 2 is currently airing, with two more episodes left in its eight-episode run.

Euphoria follows an ensemble group of teenagers residing in the town of East Highland as they navigate the difficult areas of love, sex, drugs, addiction, mental illness, and identity. Overall, the scenes of the show are narrated by its main character, Rue Bennett (Zendaya), a struggling drug addict who omnisciently observes the lives of various friends and the decisions that they make. Joining Marhsall within the star-studded cast includes the likes of Zendaya, Hunter Schafer, Maude Apatow, Angus Cloud, Sydney Sweeney, Alexa Demie, Jacob Elordi, Eric Dane, Barbie Ferreira, and Algee Smith.

In an interview with EW, each of the actresses playing the show’s mother figures commented on their respective characters and the theories surrounding each of them. Specifically, Marshall was asked about a theory of young drug dealer, Ashtray, who was abandoned as a child, being the mysterious third child seen in the Jacobs family’s photographs, with the actress immediately shutting down the TikTok theory. She then explained how she was also curious about the hidden third child, believing HBO to have a trick up their sleeve for the future. Read Marshall’s comments below:

There’s gotta be a backstory because this is HBO. They could have reshot a picture. They could have photoshopped [it]. I could have photoshopped that third son out, why is it still there?

The theory of Ashtray being the third kid of the Jacobs’ home has been an extremely popular fan theory during the airing of the show’s second season, mainly originating from TikTok. The theory took off once again after the audience saw Ashtray’s backstory during the premiere episode of Euphoria season 2. Beyond the young dealer being the long-lost brother of the antagonistic Nate Jacobs, many other theories from fans have also been proposed. Another popular theory is that the child died in his youth, which could add another sore spot for both Cal and Nate, however, neither theory has been confirmed.

With such a quick debunking of the theory, many fans of the show must return to the drawing board in the search for who this mysterious third Jacobs sibling could possibly be. Furthermore, with such a close member of the show’s cast so adamant about there being more behind the mystery of this missing child, it can be safely assumed that the Euphoria theories cooked up by fans are not for nothing. Either way, Euphoria season 2 returns with its penultimate episode on February 20.
