After a Rue-centric intervention episode, Euphoria season 2, episode 6 finally begins to explore the relationship between Lexi and Fez, giving the two characters some long overdue screentime. Both Lexi and Fez were standout characters in Euphoria season 1, but they weren’t given much to do besides react to the events going on around them. This has played directly into Lexi’s ruminations in season 2, as the character—played by Maude Apatow—has made a concerted effort to go from a silent observer to someone who takes initiative in her own life. This involves producing a play about her and her friends’ lives, but it also sees Lexi explore an unexpected connection.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The Euphoria season 2 premiere saw Lexi and Fez connect at a New Year’s Eve party and their dynamic instantly became a fan-favorite. Despite this, the sometimes disparate plotting and uneven focus once again saw their relationship sidelined in favor of other stories like the Jacobs family drama and Rue spiraling out of control again. At times, Euphoria season 2 has focused on Lexi and the production of her play, but it had yet to fully commit to the Fez and Lexi relationship.

Euphoria season 2, episode 6 saw Lexi and Fez have one of the most wholesome scenes of the series. As the two discuss Lexi’s upcoming play, which she worries will offend those it’s about, the two get high on Fez’s couch. Eventually, they end up watching the movie Stand By Me and the sparks are clearly there. As shown earlier in the season, Lexi is also protective of Fez. She defends him against Cassie while she has a nervous breakdown because of the drama with Maddy and Nate and Fez promises to go to her play. But all this begs the question: to what end is this relationship being explored?

Because of the nature of Fez’s career of choice as a local drug dealer, Angus Cloud’s character has gotten wrapped up in a potential plot to bring him down, thanks to his murder of Mouse at the end of Euphoria season 1. A sense of menace hangs over his scenes with Lexi as if the audience is supposed to know that this relationship is something that is too good to last. If the Fez and Lexi relationship is heading towards tragedy, it will most likely cause an uproar that will rival the one caused by exploring the sympathetic side of Nate’s father Cal.

At the beginning of Euphoria season 2, Cloud revealed that his character Fez was originally meant to die in season 1 and it’s possible that creator Sam Levinson still has that idea in his mind heading towards season 2’s endgame. With Faye (Fez’s house guest) potentially helping her boyfriend catch Fez while talking about Mouse’s murder, it seems like Euphoria season 2 could end with bloodshed. Giving Lexi the agency over relationships in her life, only to rip it away, could result in some interesting character development for Apatow’s character, but it also brings into question the purpose of shock value in the show. Regardless, Euphoria exploring the Fez and Lexi relationship has become one of its strong suits and, no matter how long it lasts, it will remain one of season 2’s biggest strengths.
