Alanna Ubach, who plays Suze Howard on HBO’s Euphoria, sheds light on why her character allowed Cassie to leave with Nate. As it nears its conclusion, the HBO teen drama created by Sam Levinson turned its attention to the parents in the sixth installment of season 2.  In the episode, titled “A Thousand Little Trees of Blood,” Leslie (Nika King) tries to be supportive of Rue (Zendaya) as she promises to get clean. And, in the Jacobs household, Marsha (Paula Marshall) has an occasionally tense conversation with her son, Nate (Jacob Elordi), about their dysfunctional family and their own faults.

The episode has another running thread that’s, for the most part, depicted with a humorous touch that’s been in Euphoria season 2. Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) is coming apart at the seams after her relationship with Nate is revealed, lashing out at her mother Suze and her sister Lexi (Maude Apatow). It’s to the point where Suze suggests, exasperated, that her daughter might need an exorcism. But in one of the closing scenes, the comedic aspects of the strained relationship are stripped away. Cassie leaves her home to go live with Nate. She exchanges one last look at her Suze, though they don’t say anything to each other.

In an interview with EW, which included co-stars King and Marshall, Ubach shares her thoughts on why Suze doesn’t stop Cassie from leaving with Nate. The actress explained that Suze has always wanted to be a friend to her daughters, as opposed to being feared by them. But, more than that, and specifically as it relates to Cassie, Ubach noted that Suze hopes her young daughter will learn from her mistakes because “it’s the only way that she will come back.” Ubach’s full quote is included below.

“She wants to be a big sister to her girls and she doesn’t wanna be feared. And she wants them to be able to lash out at her. It’s the only way she will know what’s going on in their lives. [Suze] wants [Cassie] to make mistakes and hopefully learn from them at the age of 16 or 17. . . She has to f— up. It’s the only way that she will come back.”

The depth and tragedy in Ubach’s remarks is a significant evolution from when viewers are first introduced to Suze in Euphoria season 1. At first, it seems Suze is the absentee parent that’s presented as a shorthand to explain why the teenagers are so troubled. While that’s likely still true to an extent, it has steadily become apparent that Ubach’s character does love her daughters a lot even if she’s often bewildered by them — and especially Cassie.

As the last moments of episode 6 make clear, Suze is correct to have her fears about Cassie’s relationship with Nate. In an attempt to replicate Maddy’s destructive dynamic with Nate, it seems, Cassie starts hitting her boyfriend. Or it could be the case that Cassie is genuinely furious at Nate for upending her life. Regardless of what those closing minutes signify, it’s clear that there is a lot of angst to be addressed before Euphoriareturns with season 3.
