Sharing an upcoming release date, DOOM Eternal and Animal Crossing: New Horizons have been the subject of many fan mash-ups over the past few weeks – and two key developers behind Animal Crossing have taken notice. Despite having almost nothing in common, aside from some Animal Crossing theories which may put the two closer together than previously thought, these crossover memes, fan art, and other showcases of passion for both upcoming games have been popping up all over the internet.

DOOM Eternal is the follow-up to Bethesda’s smash-hit 2016 shooter, DOOM, and has seemingly raised the bar on the series’ signature rip and tear dynamic, if early DOOM Eternal reviews are any indication. Animal Crossing: New Horizons, on the other hand, is a life-simulation title published and developed by Nintendo and is following up 2013’s Animal Crossing: New Leaf, but is also the first entry in the Animal Crossing series to release on a home console since Animal Crossing: City Folk landed on the Nintendo Wii all the way back in 2008.

In a recent interview with IGNNew Horizons’ director Aya Kyogoku and producer Hisashi Nogami said they have indeed taken notice of the special bond formed between the fans of each series who are embracing the duality of these titles, both of which are scheduled to release on March 20th. Speaking about the passion and creativity of the fans, Kyogoku said, “I definitely do notice and have noticed that there’s a lot of Doom and Animal Crossing collaboration art and illustrations that are being posted, and as I look through them I’m in awe of how much creativity our fans have.” Nogami sees the crossover, in a broader sense, as a celebration of games, despite the two games’ vastly different genres and appeals, which is something to be celebrated. Speaking about this, Nogami said, “We definitely do have something in common, and that is that they’re both video games, and come from that same subculture so to speak. It’s so great to see that these two different fandoms are coming together and hyping up the gaming community and gaming culture itself.

Despite not being in the same genre, fans have seemingly banded around these two disparate titles, creating unique creations that celebrate the unique qualities of each. Additionally, catching the attention of developers is certainly exciting, especially when they respond in such a positive way to an ultimately strange pairing of games.

It might just be as Kyogoku says, that the community forming between these titles is attributable to communication between the fanbases and that Animal Crossing is a game series based on communication, giving some sort of common denominator to the otherwise unrelated releases. Whatever the case, the combination of Doom and Animal Crossing: New Horizons is just the kind of wholesome content the gaming industry needs right now, creating a deep sense of community for two of the year’s biggest releases so far.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons will release on March 20th on Nintendo Switch.

DOOM Eternal will also release on March 20th for PS4, Xbox One, Stadia, and PC, with a Switch port on the way in the future.
