Tim Drake has worn a bunch of different costumes since arriving on the scene as the newest Robin. However, his foray into becoming his own hero, the Red Robin, led to Tim getting remarks that his costume looked very familiar to that of an original Justice Society of America member: Doctor Mid-Nite.

Tim’s Red Robin era began in 2009 in the titular ongoing series from Chris Yost and Ramon Bachs. After the ‘death’ of Batman in Final Crisis, Drake tries to find out the real truth behind the disappearance of his crime-fighting partner. Unfortunately for Tim, when Detective Bullock sees him act heroically, he confuses the newly costumed Red Robin for someone else entirely, Doctor Mid-Nite.

In Red Robin #9 by Yost, Bachs, and Ray McCarthy, Tim returns to Gotham City. He admits that it’s weird to miss a city so filled with crime and darkness, but that he missed it all during his time away. He runs into the Killer Moth, who is pointing a gun at someone in an alleyway. When Tim confronts him, Killer Moth tells him he just wants to leave Gotham before trying to fly away. Tim acts swiftly and uses a grappling gun to catch his opponent mid-air. When Bullock arrives on the scene with Gotham PD, he mistakes Red Robin for Doctor Mid-Nite.

To be fair to Bullock, Red Robin and Doctor Mid-Nite’s costumes are quite similar. They’re both red with long capes, have similar gloves and masks, and both have belts. In the rain, it’s easy to see why Bullock would have thought he saw Doctor Mid-Nite when in reality, it was Red Robin. Tim even laments the fact his costume is similar to Doctor Mid-Nite. He monologues that “Dr. Mid-Nite’s probably going to come find me and beat me up,” but he knows that he “could take him.”

Tim was painfully aware of how similar his costume looked to that of the original Justice Society of America team member. However, given the gap in time between Doctor Mid-Nite’s original look and his time as Red Robin, it’s forgivable that they look somewhat similar. Plus, Doctor Mid-Nite is one of the smartest heroes ever, so getting mistaken for him isn’t exactly a bad thing. Tim’s Red Robin look wouldn’t last forever as he currently sports a new costume as ‘Drake’ in Young Justice. But, as far as costumes go, the Red Robin look was one of his best – even if it unintentionally borrowed inspiration from Doctor Mid-Nite.
