A24 isn’t like other studios. Where most independent film studios pick up and produce anything they think could be successful, A24 is much more selective and has a specific aesthetic. Just as audiences know to expect lessons that even adults can learn from in Pixar movies, audiences know what to expect going into A24 movies too.

A24 has conditioned viewers to expect mind-bending thrillers and ambiguous dramas that are so open to interpretation, and 2022 is full of them. The studio hasn’t even wrapped up its 2021 release slate yet, as Joel Coen’s The Tragedy of Macbeth will be released on Christmas day. While most of the movies listed here don’t yet have specific release dates in 2022, and others have already done the festival rounds, it’s clear there are many exciting movies to look forward to next year.

After Yang

2022 could be a huge year for Colin Farrell, as he’ll be getting his own The Batman spin-off, which will focus on his depiction of the Penguin and is one of the DC shows coming to HBO Max. On top of that, he’ll be starring in one of the most exciting upcoming A24 movies, After Yang.

The movie has a wildly strange but typically A24 premise, as it’s set in the future where robotic children are used as live-in babysitters. It follows a husband and wife who attempt to save their unresponsive robotic family member, Yang. As the movie premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2021, it already has some rave reviews under its belt too.

The Eternal Daughter

The Eternal Daughter stars Tilda Swinton and is directed by Joanna Hogg, and the two are becoming a great actor and director duo. Hogg directed Swinton in the wonderful dramas The Souvenir and The Souvenir Part II, so The Eternal Daughter could make it a hattrick for the pair.

Though not much else is known about the movie, it’s as much of a mystery and a ghost story as it is a drama, and it’ll have the suitably eerie and misty backdrop of Wales, as it was shot in the country during the pandemic. The movie also comes with dollops of prestige, as it was executive produced by Martin Scorsese.

Disappointment Blvd.

Though not much is known about The Eternal Daughter, even less is known about Disappointment Blvd. Only its Joaquin Phoenix-led cast and the fact that it’s a horror movie is known. It also has the briefest of outlines, which explains that it’s a portrayal of a successful entrepreneur and that it spans decades.

The movie has an interesting concept and will mark a first for Phoenix. Out of all of Joaquin Phoenix’s best characters, he has never starred in an outright horror movie. However, Disappointment Blvd. is as much a comedy as it is a horror, and that’s apparent from all of the comedy actors who signed on to the project. And when it comes to casting, what’s also interesting is that in its long list of relatively unknown comedy actors, the one and only Meryl Streep has a credit too.

Marcel The Shell With Shoes On

Back in the 2000s, when animators were taking advantage of YouTube, users were treated with bizarre shorts like Charlie the Unicorn and Salad Fingers. And Marcel The Shell was one of those shorts, which currently has more than 30 million views. It’s one of the strangest IPs ever, as it follows the titular stop motion character walking around and telling audiences about her unique life.

The character is equal parts creepy and cute, and now there’s going to be a feature-length Marcel movie. It’ll be interesting to see how the movie plays out considering that it’s based on a three-minute clip, but strangely enough, after its debut at the Telluride Film Festival, it currently has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Red, White And Water

Jennifer Lawrence’s starring role in Don’t Look Up, a gripping movie about an Earth destroying comet, marks her return to the big screen after somewhat of a hiatus. But now, the Lawrence floodgates have reopened, and she’ll also be starring in the upcoming mysterious Red, White And Water.

It could potentially earn the actor yet another Academy Award nomination, as the film has some heavy subject matter. Yet again, A24 is keeping the movie’s premise close to its chest and little is known, but it follows a US soldier struggling to adjust to normal life after returning from Afghanistan.

Sharper

Steve and Bucky are the best Marvel Cinematic Universe couple, but in 2022, Sebastien Stan will be dropping Anthony Mackie for Julianne Moore, as the two are starring in the crime thriller Sharper together. The movie is about a con artist who works with wealthy men in a secret Manhattan billionaire organization.

The movie might be director Benjamin Curon’s directorial debut, but he has some prestigious TV work under his belt. The filmmaker has directed episodes of The Crown and BBC’s Sherlock, two of the most acclaimed shows of the past 10 years.

The Sky Is Everywhere

The Sky Is Everywhere has the potential to be the next best coming-of-age drama. Based on the novel of the same name, the film follows Lennie, a shy teenager who uses her talent as a musician as a coping mechanism after her older sister’s death.

But it gets more complicated when Lennie gets feelings for her sister’s also grieving former fiance. Along with Call Me By Your Name and Lady Bird, the 2022 A24 film could be an important movie not just for young viewers, but its newcomer lead actor too. The movie stars Grace Kaufman, who, as of yet, has almost no credits to her name.

When You Finish Saving The World

People know Jesse Eisenberg best for his iconic roles as Mark Zuckerberg and Lex Luthor, but for When You Finish Saving the World, the actor is behind the camera. Eisenberg directed the Finn Wolfhard-starring comedy-drama, which is also based on his Audible audio drama of the same name.

Not only is the audio drama poignant in its portrayal of people having different ideologies due to the generational chasm, but it’s also an interesting commentary on internet fame. The movie follows a mother and son who struggle to understand each other. The mother runs a shelter for survivors of domestic abuse, and the son sits in front of a computer playing folk songs for a small fanbase.

Everything Everywhere All At Once

Of all the talk of multiverses, as there’s one in both Spider-Man: No Way Home and the upcoming The Flash, one movie that doesn’t get talked about is Everything Everywhere All At Once. The film is about a Chinese woman struggling to do her taxes, but then gets pulled into alternate universes where she meets other versions of herself, who all range from world-class chefs to martial arts experts.

Unlike most of the upcoming A24 movies, Everything Everywhere has a trailer, and it’s the most nonsensical, unusual trailer ever, but it looks like so much fun. The creative people behind the movie are like a who’s who of Marvel Cinematic Universe alums. The movie is produced by Anthony and Joe Russo, who directed Infinity War and Endgame, and it stars Michelle Yeoh, who starred in Chang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
