The Legend of Vox Machina has one of the more storied histories in terms of fantasy TV series out there. From the series’ actual play web series, Critical Role, in 2015, the show has gone on to gain a life of its own among the D&D community for its humor, originality, characters, and story.

This new series–titled The Legend of Vox Machina–will follow the members of the Vox Machina as they set out to complete various mythic quests in Exandria. With The Legend of Vox Machina’s release set for January 28 on Prime Video, recent announcements have officially been made regarding who the major cast members on the series will be, and which character they’re set to voice. With actors, like David Tennant and Stephanie Beatriz, guest-starring as secondary characters in the show. No doubt their vocal talents and past history in voice acting will make be well utilized on the series, making them a perfect addition to the cast of Vox Machina.

Matthew Mercer (Lord Sylas Briarwood)

Given that Mercer is the main mind behind the series’ original conception and its main setting of Exandria, it shouldn’t be a surprise that he would be the star player in his own series. In the show, he will portray Lord Sylas Briarwood, the vampiric co-ruler of Whitestone, and one of the major antagonists the Vox Machina will initially face.

Mercer has always been an amazing Dungeon Master specifically for his storytelling abilities, but also for his voice acting as well, playing several different characters with their own distinct voices and personality with every episode of Critical Role. As the CCO of Critical Role Productions, Mercer has also been able to guide the company in new directions, including a partnership with Square Enix for the next Life Is Strange.

Ashley Johnson

Former child actor, Ashley Johnson, will portray Pike Trickfoot, a member of the Vox Machina and a gnome cleric. Previously, Johnson had portrayed the same character on Critical Role, before taking over a new character, Yasha Nydoorin, in 2018. In the past, Johnson’s Trickfoot acted as a moral compass for the group, passionately caring about all her fellow team members.

Johnson has portrayed her character with a mix of warmheartedness with the occasional glimpses of ruthlessness or anger towards her fellow group members or characters they’ve encountered. Like many of the main cast who transitioned from Critical Role, Johnson also has a major off-screen role on the series. When Critical Role proved immensely popular among fans and the cast began their own studio, Johnson became the President of the Critical Role Foundation, the company’s charity organization founded in 2020.

Travis Willingham

Veteran voice actor, Travis Willingham, will return to his role as Grog Strongjaw in the series. An illiterate, impulsive, goliath barbarian, Grog is a hot-headed member of the Vox Machina, but also the group’s strongest warrior.

The groundbreaking success of Vox Machina’s Kickstarter allowed Willingham and the original cast from Critical Role to reprise their roles in this animated series. In the past, Willingham has done well by blending comedy into his role as Grog, playing him as both a slow-witted, fight-loving brute, but also someone with a smarter, more sensitive side as well (referred to comically as “Professor Grog”).

Laura Bailey

Anime voice actor Laura Bailey will likewise return to her Campaign One character, Vex’ahlia “Vex” Vessar, a half-elf ranger and member of the Vox Machina, along with her brother, Vax’ildan.

A skilled archer, Vex is an invaluable member of the group, known for her charisma, self-confidence, and is accompanied by her pet bear, Trinket. Bailey plays her character with an air of mystery around her, someone whose motives remain unclear, and who is immensely skilled in the art of deception. However, Bailey also brings a good deal of warmth and softness to her, playing her with a lighter, more sensitive side (which hides behind her confident exterior).

Liam O’Brien

Critical Role regular, Liam O’Brien, has been confirmed to be returning to his role as Vox Machina member, Vax’ildan “Vax” Vessar. Like his twin sister, Vex, Vax is a half-elf, as well as being a druid, paladin, and rogue attached to the Vox Machina.

Known for his more dire and outwardly serious nature than his twin sister Vex, Vax has also been shown to have a softer side to his character. As seen in the past, O’Brien plays Vex as outwardly emotional, openly stating his feelings. It’s because of this tendency that makes him the heart and soul of the group throughout the First Campaign.

Taliesin Jaffe

Voice actor and director, Taliesin Jaffe, will play the superbly named Percival “Percy” Fredrickstein Von Musel Klossowski de Rolo III.

A young man whose family once ruled Whitestone, Percy has been living in exile after his throne was usurped by Mercer’s Sylas Briarwood. Now a gunslinger, Percy is a junior member of the Vox Machina, whose narrative will likely remain a major focus in the first season. Throughout the First Campaign, Jaffe manages to use Percy’s tragic backstory for his character, bringing a good deal of complexity to the role by portraying Percy as someone wise beyond his years.

Marisha Ray

Another longtime cast member on Critical Role, Marisha Ray will be reprising her role as Keyleth of the Air Ashari, a Vox Machina member and half-elf druid. A skilled but socially awkward sorcerer, Keyleth is a complicated figure with a tragic past.

As Keyleth, Ray perfectly gifts her character with the socially inept air of someone shy and frequently uncomfortable in their surroundings. It’s a comedic balancing act that Ray performs effortlessly well, portraying both Keyleth’s anxious nature and a deep self-loathing for her own inadequacies and constant worrying.

Sam Riegel

The final actor on the main cast, and final member of the seven-person Vox Machina team, is Sam Riegel, who returns to his Critical Role character, Scanlan Shorthalt.

A gnome bard, Shorthalt’s silver tongue and outgoing nature make him the Vox Machina’s main mouthpiece when it comes to negotiating with other characters. As Shorthalt, Riegel holds nothing back, giving him a ridiculous amount of energy and charisma. Given Shorthalt’s frequent attempts at deception, Riegel also relies on several different voices for Shorthalt’s multiple disguises, such as the super confident Burt Reynolds, Esquire.

David Tennant

According to Variety, a recent announcement has been made listing the guest actors that will also appear in the series, voicing secondary characters the main cast encounter in their travels. One of these characters will include General Krieg, played by the Tenth Doctor himself, David Tennant.

Tennant has long been an actor noted for his ability to portray a drastic array of different characters, both in animation and in physical performances. Given how likable he was in Doctor Who, fans already know Tennant can play a warm, friendly, and approachable character, as well as someone far more malevolent or with a darker side, such as Jessica Jones’ Kilgrave.

Stephanie Beatriz

The other major casting announcement from Variety came with the news that Stephanie Beatriz will play Lady Kima of Vord, a legendary warrior seen as one of the most powerful forces of good in Westruun.

Beatriz is an actor capable of expressing numerous complex emotions. As Detective Rosa Diaz on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, she managed to play a character who hides behind a tough, often stubborn exterior, similar to the kind of person Lady Kima was in Critical Role. How Beatriz will voice Lady Kima is yet to be seen, but the choice to cast the actor in the series makes sense, given Beatriz’s past acting resume.
