If there is one thing that Final Fantasy 7 fans will immediately recognize, it is the hulking sword of Cloud Strife. The Buster Sword, Cloud’s iconic weapon from the series, recently saw a major graphics update in 2020’s Final Fantasy 7Remake, but that game only had a limited number of swords thanks to the fact that FF7 Remake only covered a small portion of the original FF7’s plot. The iconic Buster Sword may be the starting weapon for Cloud in Final Fantasy 7, but the legendary former First Class SOLDIER comes with fifteen other weapons for players to find.

While the game calls it a “broadsword,” Cloud’s primary weapon more closely resembles the Dragon Slayer sword from the manga Berserk than a traditional broadsword. Though Final Fantasy 7 did not start the trope of JRPG protagonists with giant swords, it certainly helped define it.

Several of Cloud’s weapons make an appearance in Final Fantasy 7 Remake, but given the game’s more limited narrative scope most do not return from the original FF7. Each weapon has its own unique stat and materia slot combination (spaces to equip magic-granting gems) with some sacrificing materia slots for larger attack bonuses. Balancing the two can be tricky, as some weapons in Final Fantasy include passive bonuses that increase the amount of Ability Points and materia earned after battles. Generally speaking, each of Cloud’s weapons are better than the one before it.

All FF7 Swords Cloud Can Equip

Some of the trickier swords Cloud can equip include the Yoshiyuki, which doubles its attack when a party member is down, and triples it when both other party members are reduced to zero HP. The most powerful sword Cloud can wield is easily the Ultima Weapon, a recurring weapon trope in the Final Fantasy series. Players can only get one Ultima Weapon in a playthrough, and that’s by defeating the Ultimate Weapon in an optional boss fight.

There is one other sword that Cloud wields, but it isn’t until the Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children sequel film. The Fusion Sword is the Swiss Army knife-looking sword that hides a total of six smaller swords in it and in Cloud’s signature motorcycle, Fenrir. The complete list of Cloud’s swords may seem relatively short, especially given the amount of time players can invest in Final Fantasy 7, but players get plenty of use out of Cloud’s broadswords throughout the game.
