One of the most charming things about Lorelai Gilmore is her special sense of smell for snow. Her giddy excitement when she feels the chill in the air is infectious, and Redditors think it’s one of the many things about the WB/CW show that still work today.

Although not every season featured Lorelai’s signature snowfall moment, there has been a specific episode in each of the seven seasons that’s showed the first snowfall of Stars Hollow – with some being a bit more magical than others.

7 Season 4, Episode 10 – “The Nanny And The Professor”

The first is shown for season 4 as Lorelai and Michel, Reddit’s favorite relatable Gilmore Girls character, are walking over to Sookie’s house with samples for the new inn. This snowfall represents a new beginning for Lorelai, as it’s her first snow since she, Sookie, and Michel decide to open up an inn together.

The snow is especially meaningful as ice and cold opposing fire, which is what destroyed the Independence Inn in the previous season. The episode also features a hilarious rivalry between Michel and Tobin, who’s nannying Davey. Additionally, this is also the episode that Rory spots Paris and Asher Fleming kissing passionately in secret at Yale.

6 A Year In The Life – “Winter”

It was perfectly fitting that the reunion of the fan-favorite mother and daughter duo started in the wintertime. It is a shame, though, that they didn’t recreate one of Lorelai’s magical snow moments. However, the significance of having the snow already be there is still fantastic.

Snow, for Lorelai, symbolizes joy. It’s her time of year when everything’s right in the world, and when her intuition is at its strongest. When she first appears onscreen, she’d amongst bustling mitten-clad Stars Hollow folk, watching the merriment happily with a coffee in hand. It was the only first shot of the new special series that would be completely Gilmore.

5 Season 3, Episode 10 – “That’ll Do, Pig”

Season 3’s snow episode is another one that starts off with the Gilmores on the move. Lorelai, Rory, and Lane walk through the Stars Hollow streets talking about their mornings. It’s actually a very adorable scene that showcases the bond between Lorelai and Lane.

As Rory complains about Lorelai using all of the hot water, Lorelai asks Lane about her music and even jokingly pretends to see Lane’s mom across the street before laughing and throwing her arm around Lane. Lane doesn’t have a “friend” type relationship with her mother like Rory does, and her bond with Lorelai is one of the things Redditors love about Lane’s character.

4 Season 2, Episode 10 – “The Bracebridge Dinner”

If having Lorelai prophecize the first snowfall is the best-case scenario for a great first snow episode of Gilmore Girls, then season 2’s first snow is a close second. The episode opens with Lorelai and Rory competing in a snowman-building contest and having their signature witty banter.

The many events of Stars Hollow are part of what makes the show so special, and Lorelai’s enthusiasm for both Stars Hollow and winter means that she would be first in line to participate in anything, even if it means standing in the cold and crafting and competing against “the Michelangelo of snow.”

3 Season 6, Episode 11 – “The Perfect Dress”

As a Lorelai Snow Moment episode, season 6’s first snowfall is already a cut above the rest. Even so, this snowfall foreshadowed a different sort of new beginning for Lorelai. In the episode, she’s unsure about anything having to do with her and Luke’s wedding and hasn’t done any planning.

Suddenly, she finds the perfect dress and quickly everything else fell perfectly into place, highlighting her signature intuition. As she runs excitedly to Luke’s to tell him all of the good news, his lack of enthusiasm is a subtle nod to the beginning of the end for them. When Lorelai mentions a “sign” about all of her decisions, it begins to snow on cue and she’s ecstatic. Luke, however, tells her it’s just weather.

2 Season 5, Episode 11 – “Women Of Questionable Morals”

Soundly sleeping at Luke’s place, Lorelai awakens all of a sudden and starts to shake Luke awake as well. As she rushes to get him out of bed, she tells him that snow is coming. Half asleep, he tells her the weather people said it would be weeks before snow. Lorelai brings them to the middle of the street, looking up. Luke is mid-sentence when it begins to snow, and he smiles and calls the weathermen idiots.

Many people think Luke and Lorelai were meant to be, and the two definitely have many romantic moments throughout Gilmore Girls. Luke would gladly follow Lorelai anywhere and do anything to make her happy, and this episode is an example of that. Even when Lorelai’s beloved snow later makes a branch fall on her car and prompts a “break up” between the two, Luke makes her an ice rink to fix things.

1 Season 1, Episode 8 – “Love And War And Snow”

This rendition of Lorelai sensing a coming snowfall is most likely the best because it was the first time she ever showcased her power, explaining how it works for her and what it means. It’s the first time fans get to see Lorelai in her wintery element, even waking Rory up with a wide-open window.

She reveals to Rory that her love for the fluffy white accumulation stems from her belief that all of the best things in her life have happened during snowfall. Even Rory’s birth, apparently, took place during a snowstorm. Later she tells Luke that when she was sick as a child, she wished for something wonderful to happen to he – then she awoke to snow the next morning.
