There are special secrets hidden in the darkness of the Lental region in New Pokémon Snap. While the majority of the game’s adventure is spent snapping photos of Pokémon species, New Pokémon Snap players will also be helping Professor Mirror investigate an odd occurrence happening in the Lental region. Illumina Pokémon are strange, glowing variants of existing Pokémon species, and finding them will be a primary objective for New Pokémon Snap players.

While New Pokémon Snap’s Illumina Orbs provide a temporary glow to regular Pokémon species, and encourage them to engage in different behaviors, this effect will vanish after a few moments. However, Illumina Pokémon are the powerful guardians of the Lental region, and don’t need the orbs to glow. These Pokémon are located in Illumina Spots, which are separate routes from the “Night” and “Day” options available in most of the other areas that are part of the Lental region’s map.

Surprisingly, the majority of the Illumina Pokémon in New Pokémon Snap aren’t Legendary species, nor are they the popular Pokémon commonly picked for special abilities in past games like Charizard, Eevee, or Pikachu. Instead, New Pokémon Snap selects an assortment of less commonly used species from different regions to take up positions as Lental’s mighty protectors, offering fans a chance to see these Pokémon in new and interesting ways.

All Illumina Pokémon In New Pokémon Snap (& Their Locations)

Currently, there are 6 Illumina Pokémon taking up residence in the Lental Region, according to Serebii. While some of these Illumina Pokémon are easy to locate, like Meganium in Florio Nature Park’s Illumina Spot, others require a bit more effort to uncover. Below is a list of each Illumina Pokémon, and where it can be found in New Pokémon Snap.

  • Meganium – Florio Nature Part Illumina Spot.
  • Wishiwashi – Maricopia Islands Illumina Spot.
  • Milotic – Belusylva Islands Illumina Spot.
  • Volcarona – Voluca Islands Illumina Spot.
  • Steelix – Durice Island Illumina Spot.

Each Illumina Spot unlocks when certain requirements are completed for each of the areas. For example, New Pokémon Snap’s Florio Nature Park Illumina Spot becomes available when the Night route has been completed at least once. Players can visit the Illumina Spots as many times as they wish, and catch different Pokémon species interacting with the Illumina Pokémon to obtain higher-level photos for their New Pokémon Snap Photodex, making each visit a magical experience.
