Players are hitting the streets and rooftops of Knockout City for competitive dodgeball gameplay. Developed by Velan Studios and published by EA, Knockout City brings a rather unique take on what is essentially an online arena shooter. Standard matches are played between two teams of three, and the first to 10 knockouts is the winner of the round. Teams need to win two rounds for the game to be over.

Although it looks simple on the surface, Knockout City is deceptively hard to master. Practice is required to consistently catch thrown dodgeballs, and there are plenty of movement and throwing mechanics that add a lot of depth. In arena shooter fashion, there are also special types of dodgeballs littered around the map. Each match typically only has one type of special ball, but each will have to be mastered to see any success in Knockout City.

Knockout City has just launched, and is currently in a free trial period until May 30. Plenty of “dodgebrawlers” – as Knockout City refers to players – will be joining the fray during this time. So, getting an early grasp on every ball type will be crucial for early success.

Each Special Ball In Knockout City

There are five types of special balls that can appear in a Knockout City match. More are expected to come to the game in later seasons, but right now anyone picking up Knockout City from Game Pass or EA Play will only have to worry about these types delivering a KO.

  • Bomb Ball – Picking up a Bomb Ball starts its detonation timer. There will be plenty of time to acquire a target, but players will want to be careful not to deal damage to themselves or teammates with the explosion. Throwing too early can be a problem too, since the Bomb Ball can still be caught and thrown back.
  • Cage Ball – Hitting an opponent with the Cage Ball will trap them inside. Players can hit another opponent with their own trapped teammate for a one-hit KO. Alternatively, throwing a trapped player off of a roof for the knock out is nefariously satisfying.
  • Moon Ball – The Moon Ball is particularly advantageous to the holder. Players can defy gravity and jump higher while carrying a Moon Ball, making it easier to maneuver to the high ground in Knockout City‘s bouncy gameplay. Hitting an opposing player with a Moon Ball will send them flying on impact.
  • Multi Ball – Granting the player three balls simultaneously, the Multi Ball makes the holder a significant threat. Multiple opponents can be taken on at once, or a KO can be almost assured by throwing all three in quick succession.
  • Sniper Ball – Devastating at long range, the Sniper Ball has to be charged in order to be used effectively. Throwing it too soon will result in a slow velocity, but waiting until it’s fully charged makes the Sniper Ball incredibly difficult to catch.

These special balls are just one aspect of the gameplay that make Knockout City more complicated than it first appears. Understanding each of them will be key to succeeding as a dodgebrawler.
