Brewing meads can greatly increase the odds of survival during exploration in the dangerous world of Valheim. Instead of collecting or crafting potions like in many other exploration games, Valheim uses meads to restore health points and stamina, as well as provide resistance to certain damaging effects like fire, frost, and poison. Unfortunately, brewing mead isn’t as simple as throwing random ingredients into a crafting menu. Each mead base in Valheim requires certain components, themselves ranging in rarity, that must then must be cooked and fermented for the mead to be useable.

To begin making mead, players will need to have access to a Cauldron over a campfire or hearth. Valheim’s Cauldrons are used to cook stews, soups, and other edible items with higher restorative properties than raw berries and vegetables. A Cauldron requires the Forge to be crafted and will cost 10 tin. The Fermenter in Valheim is a bit more expensive than the Cauldron and can take longer to acquire. It will also be crafted using the Forge and will cost 30 Fine Wood, 5 Bronze, and 10 Resin.

Players will also need a steady supply of honey to craft a decent amount of mead. Wild beehives are found attached to abandoned buildings and can be busted open to obtain both honey and a Queen Bee. It is important to attack the hives with caution, however, as bee strings will inflict poison on the player and can be deadly during early gameplay. This can often be avoided by attacking the hive with a ranged weapon like a bow. After collecting a number of Queen Bees, players can create a Valheim honey farm. A domesticated beehive can be built with 10 wood and one Queen Bee, and can then be placed on the base to begin making honey.

Every Valheim Mead & Wine Base Recipe

Currently, there are eight mead bases that can be cooked in Valheim, though one is technically a wine and requires barely instead of honey. Each recipe calls for different specialty ingredients to gain the proper effects, and may require players to delve into dangerous Valheim biomes, or battle unpleasant creatures to grind specific loot. To save multiple trips to more difficult biomes, players may want to amass a large amount of the needed ingredients in one trip.

  • Mead Base: Minor Stamina – Players will need x10 Honey, x10 Raspberries, and x10 Yellow Mushrooms. Creates x6 mead for every 1 fermented base.

What Every Valheim Mead And Wine Does

Once the desired mead bases are ready, players will need to put them into the fermenters. Much like beehives, having a decent number of fermenters set up on a Valheim base will speed up the process of mass-producing each type of mead. Players will also want to put the Fermenters in a sheltered space on their base to protect them from being destroyed during troll attacks. Meads will need two days in-game to finish fermenting and can be held in a player’s inventory in stacks of 10. Like workbenches, Valheim Fermenters must be covered to work, so building a fermentation building might be a useful way to house a mead operation. Below is every mead and wine and their benefits, according to IGN.

  • Minor Stamina Mead – Restores 80 stamina points, stamina recovers more quickly for 120 seconds. Can only be used every 2 minutes.
  • Medium Stamina Mead– Restores 160 stamina points, stamina recovers more quickly for 120 seconds. Can only be used every 2 minutes.
  • Minor Healing Mead – Restores 50 health points over 10 seconds. Can only be used every 2 minutes.
  • Medium Healing Mead – Restores 75 health points for a duration of 10 seconds. Can only be used every 2 minutes.
  • Fire Resistance Barely Wine – Provides resistance to fire damage for a duration of 600 seconds. Is more effective depending on the player’s armor.
  • Frost Resistance Mead – Provides resistance against freezing effects and frost damage for a duration of 600 seconds as long as the player isn’t wet. Is more effective depending on the player’s armor.
  • Poison Resistance Mead – Provides resistance against poison and reduces the duration of poison effects for a duration of 600 seconds.
  • Tasty Mead – Subtracts 50 health points and restores 300 stamina points for a duration of 10 seconds. No cooldown after the 10-second duration.

It is possible more mead and wine recipes will be added to Valheim as future content is released. Currently, the game is still in early development and new effects and buffs have been introduced through updates as part of the Valheim roadmap leading to the official launch. It is likely Major Healing and Stamina Meads will be introduced with better buffs than the Medium Meads, as well as higher-level resistance meads with longer effect durations. The recipes for these meads could also include new ingredients from other biomes or require an upgraded Fermenter made of stronger materials.

It would also be interesting to see ability potions introduced to Valheim, allowing players to move faster, breathe underwater, shapeshift into animals, or even fly for a temporary period of time, which can only be done currently with the use of mods or cheats. These ability potions could require rare drops from boss-level Valheim enemies, or only be available to craft after maxing out certain skills. Because Valheim is still in early access, there is plenty of future opportunities to expand the effects of meads, and offer new ways to explore the Viking world.
