Godzilla vs. Kong is right around the corner, but rumors are still persisting about certain Toho kaiju appearing in the film. For more than year there was a great deal of speculation surrounding several Toho monsters and their potential for being in Godzilla vs. Kong, but at this point, it’s become clear that most of them won’t be involved. With marketing in full swing, fans have a somewhat clearer picture of what the story will entail.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters centered on four Titans, but the next installment in the MonsterVerse will limit its focus to just two. All eyes will be on the two pop culture icons, who have only fought once in cinematic history. Kong, who will be depicted as a hero to the humans, will become engaged in a heated conflict with Godzilla, with whom he shares a rivalry that originated with their ancestors. Apparently, the two are descendants of monsters that fought in an ancient Titan War that’s now being continued in the modern era. According to Godzilla vs. Kong trailers and promos, the fighting won’t end until one of them submits to the other.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Footage from the movie has confirmed that Godzilla and Kong won’t be the only monsters squaring off. Also included in the action are two winged serpents and another flying monster. All three are new to the MonsterVerse, and many more are expected to appear in the Hollow Earth portions of the movie as well. Of course, it’s possible that all of them will be original Titans, but some are theorizing that Godzilla vs. Kong could still be hiding a few surprise inclusions from Toho’s library. Here are all the Toho monsters that are currently rumored for Godzilla vs. Kong.

Mechagodzilla

Legendary has yet to confirm that Godzilla’s robotic duplicate is in Godzilla vs. Kong, but his presence hasn’t been a very well-kept secret. It all started with leaked images of a Mechagodzilla action figure in January 2020. This made what originally sounded like a Mechagodzilla Easter egg in the Godzilla: King of the Monsters credits feel more like a tease of the MonsterVerse’s future. A newspaper article in the credits mentioned a “mechanized giant” being built by Monarch. Later, the Godzilla vs. Kong trailer revealed a blueprint of a Mecha-Titan that looks remarkably like Mechagodzilla. Plus, other merchandise associated with Godzilla vs. Kong has shown off his design. That being said, Legendary is still staying quiet on Mechagodzilla.

As for what his role could be, it’s widely believed that he’ll be the villain who forces the two titular Titans to put aside their differences. Though Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard has repeatedly claimed that Godzilla and Kong will fight until there’s a winner, that doesn’t mean a team-up isn’t on the horizon. It could be that after one triumphs over the other, Mechagodzilla will come onto the scene, followed by the two begrudgingly working together to beat him. It’s also likely that the mechanized Titan is central to the story related to Madison (Millie Bobby Brown), Bernie (Brian Tyree Henry), and Josh (Julian Dennison). Nicknamed “Team Godzilla”, this group of characters will be investigating the villainous organization known as APEX and their connection to Godzilla’s unusually aggressive behavior. Given that APEX specializes in cybernetics, it would make perfect sense for Mechagodzilla to be revealed as their secret weapon.

Rodan

While it’s true that Rodan hasn’t been featured in any of the marketing for Godzilla vs. Kong, not all theories about him being in the movie have subsided. Of the three Toho kaiju who joined the MonsterVerse in King of the Monsters, only Rodan survived, and for that reason, he’d be the easiest to bring back. Many suspect that the King of the Skies could make a brief appearance in Godzilla vs. Kong, possibly as a Titan who clashes with Kong on behalf of the alpha. Since it has been said that a “monster war” will occur in the film, it doesn’t seem like a stretch for multiple Titans to appear and take sides in the conflict.

Mecha-King Ghidorah

Details that emerged from set visits to Godzilla vs. Kong hint at a second Mecha-Titan joining the movie: Mecha-King Ghidorah. In Toho’s Godzilla vs King Ghidorah, the Japanese government recovered the dead body of Ghidorah and turned him into a cyborg. The possibility of the MonsterVerse adapting this version of the character was first raised when the head bitten off by Godzilla during the Mexico fight was shown being sold to Jonah (Charles Dance) in the King of the Monsters post-credits scene. Because of his alien nature and regenerative properties, resurrecting him could very well be on the table. Reports of his head being hooked up with wires and mechanical parts in Godzilla vs. Kong have provided further evidence that the MonsterVerse is indeed about to introduce their own take on Mecha-Ghidorah. While it could be that the head is just being used to power Mechagodzilla, it may be that Godzilla and Kong will have to fight not one, but two Mecha-Titans at the end of the movie.

Kumonga

A new poster for Godzilla vs. Kong shows a giant spider standing behind Kong. It could be another original MonsterVerse Titan, but a more exciting option is that it’s Kumonga, the spider kaiju who fought Godzilla in Son of Godzilla and helped him take down Ghidorah in Destroy All Monsters. If it turns out not to be him, this would be the second time fans were tricked into thinking that Kumonga was joining the MonsterVerse. The spider-like legs in the King of the Monsters trailers were thought to belong to him until the official introduction of Scylla. Perhaps this time the MonsterVerse will use the real Kumonga, as opposed to a similar monster that looks like him. Whether this creature is Kumonga or a new Titan, it could be that the spider is one of the Titans Kong will come across during his journey into the Hollow Earth.

Mothra

Mothra died in King of the Monsters, but her virtual immortality makes her a candidate to be a mystery Titan in Godzilla vs. Kong. Mothra is a character that will always reborn, as long as she gets a chance to leave behind an egg before her demise. Since the egg in the King of the Monsters credits was presumably Mothra’s, she could be reintroduced at any time. Also, it’s been reported that the upcoming movie will expand on the Mothra mythos with the Twin Fairies [via CinemaBlend]. Zhang Ziyi’s character, Dr. Chen, is confirmed to return in some capacity, which has resulted in more questions about a potential Mothra appearance. After all, Dr. Chen and her sister are descendants of the MonsterVerse’s take on Mothra’s two tiny companions, so it does seem reasonable that her role in the story could be connected in some way to Mothra. If that’s true, it may be that the events of Godzilla vs. Kong will lead to Mothra’s rebirth.
