Every Movie Coming To Theaters In April 2022

April will bring a variety of movies and some highly-anticipated titles as well, among those a comic book movie that was delayed multiple times, a sequel to a video-game adaptation, Michael Bay’s latest action movie, a new adventure from the Wizarding World, and a Scandinavian legend. The world is slowly but surely going back to normal even though the coronavirus pandemic is still going, and cinemas all over the world are still open and operating as normal. This has allowed studios to release those movies that had to be delayed, although many are still choosing to either send them directly to streaming platforms, release them simultaneously in theaters and streaming, or reduce the window between theatrical and streaming releases.

Surprisingly, March didn’t see many movies arriving in theaters and only a couple of big projects hit the big screen, as were Matt Reeves’ The Batman, the supernatural horror movie Umma, the slasher movie X, and the adventure comedy The Lost City. Most of the movie releases in March had their premieres at South by Southwest Festival, so unlike other recent releases, they aren’t scheduled for a streaming release yet, except for After Yang, which had a simultaneous release on Showtime. March also welcomed movies that premiered at other festivals weeks prior, as was the case of the crime drama The Outfit and the thriller Alice.

April will see a longer list of movies hitting theaters and many big titles as well, including a new entry in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, Sonic’s newest adventure, the latest Michael Bay action movie, the third Fantastic Beasts movie, Robert Eggers’ newest project, and more. Here’s every movie coming to theaters in April 2022.

Morbius – April 1

After multiple delays, Sony’s Morbius is finally coming to theaters. Directed by Daniel Espinosa, Morbius follows Dr. Michael Morbius (Jared Leto), a scientist suffering from a rare blood disease who tries a dangerous cure that afflicts him with a form of vampirism. This gives him superhuman abilities but none of the superstitious weaknesses associated with vampires. Morbius is part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe and also stars Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Tyrese Gibson, and Michael Keaton, who reprises his role as Vulture from the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man: Homecoming.

The Contractor – April 1

The Contractor is a war-action movie directed by Tarik Saleh and starring Chris Pine. James Harper (Pine) is involuntarily discharged from the United States Army Special Forces and so he joins a private contracting organization alongside his best friend Mike (Ben Foster) and under the command of a fellow veteran (Kiefer Sutherland) in order to support his family. Overseas on a covert mission, Harper must evade those trying to kill him while making his way back home.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 – April 8

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 continues the title character’s adventures on the big screen. Directed by Jeff Fowler, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 sees Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) determined to make his mark as a hero and decided to stay in Green Hills while Tom (James Marsden) and Maddie (Tika Sumpter) go to Hawaii for her sister’s wedding. When Doctor Eggman (Jim Carrey) returns from the mushroom planet in search of Master Emerald to conquer the world and exact revenge against Sonic with the help of Knuckles the Echidna (Idris Elba), Sonic and his new friend Miles “Tails” Prower (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) set out to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will be available to stream on Paramount+ 45 days after its theatrical release.

Ambulance – April 8

Ambulance is an action thriller movie directed by Michael Bay and based on the Danish movie of the same name by Laurits Munch-Petersen and Lars Andreas Pedersen. In need of money to cover his wife’s medical bills, decorated veteran Will Sharp (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) teams up with his adoptive brother, Danny (Jake Gyllenhaal), to steal $32 million from a Los Angeles bank. However, when their getaway goes spectacularly wrong, the desperate thieves hijack an ambulance that’s carrying a severely wounded cop and an EMT worker. Caught in a high-speed chase, the two siblings must figure out a way to outrun the law while keeping their hostages alive. Ambulance will stream on Peacock 45 days after its theatrical release.

All The Old Knives – April 8

All The Old Knives is a thriller movie directed by Janus Metz Pedersen and based on the novel of the same name by Olen Steinhauer. It follows Henry Pelham (Chris Pine) and Celia Harrison (Thandiwe Newton), ex-lovers and spies who meet over dinner to reminisce on their time together at Vienna station. They end up talking about the disastrous hijacking of Royal Jordanian Flight 127, which ended in the deaths of all on board. This failure haunts the CIA to this day, and Henry seeks to close the book on that seedy chapter. Over a sumptuous dinner, it becomes clear that one of them is not going to survive the meal. All The Old Knives will also be available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

As They Made Us – April 8

As They Made Us is a comedy-drama movie written and directed by Mayim Bialik. Abigail (Dianna Agron), a divorced mother of two, is struggling to balance the dynamic forces within her dysfunctional family as she attempts to cultivate new love. Her father, Eugene (Dustin Hoffman), has a degenerative condition that he and his wife Barbara (Candice Bergen) refuse to accept, and her brother Nathan (Simon Helberg) has been estranged from the family for decades. A self-appointed fixer, Abigail attempts to mend her complicated family’s dysfunction before it’s too late.

Agent Game – April 8

Agent Game is a spy action-thriller movie directed by Grant S. Johnson. It follows CIA officer Harris (Dermot Mulroney) who is involved in missions to detain and relocate foreign nationals for interrogation. When Harris’ superior (played by Jason Isaacs) is murdered, he finds himself the scapegoat for the killing of a detainee (Barkhad Abdi) and must run from a team of operatives sent to bring him in and led by a ruthless double agent (Annie Ilonzeh).

Father Stu – April 13

Father Stu is a biographical drama written and directed by Rosalind Ross. Based on the true story of Stuart Long (played by Mark Wahlberg), it follows his journey from a boxer whose career ends after an injury, to a priest following a motorcycle accident that makes him realize he can use this second chance to help others. Also starring are Jacki Weaver, and Mel Gibson.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore – April 15

The third entry in the Fantastic Beasts franchise is finally arriving this month. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore covers the Wizarding World’s involvement in World War II while Gellert Grindelwald’s (now played by Mads Mikkelsen) power rapidly grows. Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) entrusts Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) and his friends with a mission leading to a clash with Grindelwald’s army, and so the legendary wizard must decide how long he will stay on the sidelines in the approaching war, but a confrontation with Grindelwald is inevitable. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore will be available to stream on HBO Max 45 days after its theatrical release.

Chariot – April 15

Chariot is a sci-fi comedy movie written and directed by Adam Sigal. Dr. Karn (John Malkovich), an odd, eccentric specialist, guides unknowing patients through the process of reincarnation. When Harrison Hardy (Thomas Mann) experiences recurring dreams, he turns to Dr. Karn for help and reveals his encounter with a woman whom he loved in a previous life. Noticing a glitch in the system, the doctor must fix the issue before permanently derailing his patient’s future.

The Bad Guys – April 22

The Bad Guys is an animated crime comedy directed by Pierre Perifel and based on the children’s book series of the same name by Aaron Blabey. The Bad Guys is set in a world where humans and anthropomorphic animals coexist. In it, a gang of criminal animals – Mr. Wolf (Sam Rockwell), Mr. Piranha (Anthony Ramos), Mr. Snake (Marc Maron), Mr. Shark (Craig Robinson), and Ms. Tarantula (Awkwafina) – have made a deal to go good in order to avoid serving prison time, but as they begin to enjoy their new lifestyle, a new villain emerges. The Bad Guys will stream on Peacock 45 days after its theatrical release and will move to Netflix after Peacock’s four-month exclusive window.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent – April 22

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is a black comedy action movie directed by Tom Gormican and written by him and Kevin Etten. It stars Nicolas Cage as a fictionalized version of himself in a story where he begrudgingly accepts a $1 million offer to attend the birthday of billionaire super fan, Javi Gutierrez (Pedro Pascal). When the party takes a wild turn, Cage is forced to become a version of some of his most iconic and beloved characters in order to extricate his wife and daughter from Javi, who also happens to be a notorious drug lord.

The Northman – April 22

The Northman is an epic historical movie directed by Robert Eggers and written by him and Sjón based on the Scandinavian legend of Amleth, the direct inspiration of William Shakespeare’s Prince Hamlet. The Northman, then, explores how far a Viking prince (Alexander Skarsgård) will go to seek justice for his murdered father. Starring alongside Skarsgård are Nicole Kidman, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, Björk, Willem Dafoe, and many, many more.
