Every Movie Releasing In March 2020

February brought some of the most anticipated movies of the year from different genres, and March is not staying behind, offering a bit of everything for all tastes and ages. Last month witnessed the return of Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey (which, sadly, didn’t have a smooth run), the cinematic debut of Sonic the Hedgehog, and a new take on the horror classic The Invisible Man. February also brought a generous amount of horror and suspense with The Lodge, Fantasy Island, and Brahms: The Boy II.

This month won’t have any big franchise releases either, as most of them are being saved for the summer and the last quarter of the year, but there will still be some interesting and fun movies worth checking out. March will take it easier with horror releases but it will bring one of the most anticipated sequels of the genre, as well as a comedy that has been delayed a couple of times, and the latest fantasy story from Pixar’s lab.

Of course, this month will also have its dose of live-action versions of animated classics, characters jumping from the comic book pages to the big screen, and a couple of drama movies to keep balance. Here are the biggest movies coming out in March.

Onward – March 6

Pixar has two movies lined up for this year, and first on the list is Onward. Set in a world where various mythical creatures coexist – such as elves, trolls, goblins, and mermaids – Onward follows brothers Ian and Barley Lightfoot, who receive a magical spear that allows them to bring back their dead father for one day. When the spell goes wrong and only half of his father returns, they go on a quest to see if there’s still magic left in the world that can help them bring their father back properly. Onward’s voice cast includes Tom Holland and Chris Pratt as the Lightfoot brothers, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as their mother, and Octavia Spencer as an ally of the brothers.

The Way Back – March 6

The Way Back is a sports drama movie directed by Gavin O’Connor (Warrior) and starring Ben Affleck. It tells the story of Jack Cunningham (Affleck), a former student basketball player who is now a construction worker struggling with alcoholism. When Jack is offered a coaching job at his alma mater, he realizes he has to confront his demons while also leading his team to victory. The Way Back was originally scheduled for an October 2019 release, and it’s now ready to see the light.

Escape From Pretoria – March 6

February welcomed Guns Akimbo, and March’s dose of Daniel Radcliffe is in Escape From Pretoria. Based on the book Inside Out: Escape From Pretoria Prison by Tim Jenkin, the movie tells the true-life story of political prisoners Jenkin (Radcliffe) and Stephen Lee (Daniel Webber) who escaped from Pretoria Central Prison in South Africa in 1979. Their crime? Producing and distributing 18 different pamphlets on behalf of banned organizations during the apartheid era. Of course, escaping from this prison will require a complicated and carefully elaborated plan.

Run This Town – March 6

If you don’t feel like watching an animated movie, nor a sports drama, nor a thriller, Run This Town is a good option. It details the emerging political scandal in Toronto in 2013 during the final year of Rob Ford’s tenure as mayor, all seen through the eyes of young staffers at city hall and a local newspaper. Run This Town stars Ben Platt, Nina Dobrev, Mena Massoud, and Damian Lewis.

Bloodshot – March 13

This month’s dose of superhero action will come in the shape of Valiant Comics’ Bloodshot. Directed by David S.F. Wilson (in his directorial debut), Bloodshot tells the story of Ray Garrison (Vin Diesel), a Marine who is reborn by a team of scientists after he and his wife are assassinated. Garrison is enhanced with nanotechnology and becomes a superhuman, biotech killing machine – but is unable to recall anything from his past. As his memories begin to come back, he decides to go after his and his wife’s killer, but there will be a lot of obstacles in the way.

My Spy – March 13

My Spy is an action comedy directed by Peter Segal and starring Dave Bautista as JJ Cena, a hardened CIA operative. When Cena is assigned to surveil the family of Sophie Newton (Chloe Coleman), he finds himself at the mercy of this precocious 9-year-old, who asks him to teach her to be a spy. In the process, Cena will learn to loosen up and enjoy life a bit more. My Spy was originally scheduled for an August 2019 release, but was pushed back to 2020, though it was released in Australia last month.

The Roads Not Taken – March 13

Written and directed by Sally Potter, The Roads Not Taken is a drama movie starring Javier Bardem, Elle Fanning, Salma Hayek, and Laura Linney. It follows a day in the life of Leo (Bardem) and his daughter Molly (Fanning) as he navigates through alternate lives he could have lived, prompting Molly to wrestle with her own path as she considers her future. The Roads Not Taken premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival in February and is now ready to hit theaters.

A Quiet Place Part II – March 20

After the success of A Quiet Place in 2018, John Krasinski is back with a sequel, appropriately titled A Quiet Place Part II. The story reunites Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, and Noah Jupe as Evelyn, Regan, and Marcus Abbott, as they continue to do their best to survive in silence after the death of their husband/father. The Abbotts will come across with other survivors (Cillian Murphy and Djimon Hounsou), but will also learn that there are other threats out there that aren’t supernatural. Krasinski reprised his role as Lee Abbott in flashbacks, which will hopefully shed some light on how the whole chaos began.

The Truth – March 20

The Truth is a French-Japanese drama movie written and directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda. It follows the story of Fabienne (Catherine Deneuve), one of the great stars of French cinema, who has a problematic relationship with her daughter, Lumir (Juliette Binoche). When Lumir returns to Paris with her husband Hank (Ethan Hawke) and their young child, things get even more complicated as Fabienne publishes her memoir, prompting mother and daughter to confront their past issues. The Truth had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in August 2019, and later screened at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Mulan – March 27

The live-action trend continues and next on the list is Mulan, the adaptation of Disney’s 1998 animated movie of the same name. Directed by Niki Caro, Mulan stars Liu Yifei as the title character, and very much like the animated version, it centers around the eldest daughter of an honored warrior who steps in to take the place of her ailing father – but in order to achieve this, she disguises herself as a man to battle northern invaders in China, prompting her to harness her inner strength and embrace her true potential.
