The Witcher season 2 will undoubtedly introduce more monsters for Geralt to face, with several already teased in the new trailer. Based on the book series by Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher made its debut on Netflix in December 2019 and was a big hit with critics and viewers, with Henry Cavill’s performance as the gruff Geralt of Rivia singled out for praise. Netflix is well aware of the popularity of Sapkowski’s stories, and their video game adaptations still hold, with The Witcher season 2 set for a December 2021 release on Netflix.

The Witcher approaches Sapkowski’s iconic characters and stories somewhat differently, with a non-linear narrative following three characters in different places and points in time, with their paths converging towards the end of the season. These characters are the title witcher, Geralt of Rivia; Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra), a powerful sorceress; and Ciri (Freya Allan), the crown princess of Cintra. Throughout season 1, Geralt meets and slays many different monsters, with more to be featured in the Netflix Witcher narrative.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The second season of Netflix’s The Witcher is certain to welcome more monsters and creatures into the fold as Geralt’s journey to save the Continent continues. Netflix’s Halloween teaser video showcases some brand new foes for the Witcher to battle, as does the official Netflix The Witcher season 2 trailer. Here’s every new monster teased for The Witcher season 2 so far:

Bruxae

The presence of Bruxae in Netflix’s The Witcher was revealed through the casting of Agnes Bjorn as Vereena, a powerful Bruxa who falls in love with another new character, Nivellen. A Bruxae is a type of vampire that takes on dark-haired young women’s appearance, but their natural form is that of large, black bats with sharp fangs and claws. Unlike traditional vampires, they are not affected by sunlight, and they let out a piercing scream that can send a grown man flying through the air. The Witcher’s season 2 trailer confirms the Bruxae’s shapeshifting abilities, with Geralt reacting in a split second as a large bat attempts to catch him from behind.

The Crawling Creature

In the aforementioned “Monster Mash” video, around the 15-second mark, there’s a swift look at one of the monsters in The Witcher season 2. It’s a one-eyed creature with long legs resembling branches, crawling over what appears to be a log (not only is it a very brief look, but also a very dark one). To date, fans have not figured out what this monster is, but the most similar creature there is to the unidentified image shown is the Eyehead, a monster with four pairs of thin legs, a segmented body, and eyes mounted on stalks. It’s also possible that this could be a new monster or even a part of a bigger, more menacing creature yet to be unveiled in The Witcher season 2.

The Three Skeletons

Around the 30-second mark in the same video, there is a slightly longer look at three skeletons, which might not look as menacing as the other creatures, but canonically could potentially be the source of a lot of chaos for Geralt and company. Fans have pointed out their resemblance to a couple of creatures from The Witcher, mostly the banshees from the immensely popular video games series. Banshees are female spirits who cry on Saovine night, wailing a warning of those who will die. Although they are not actually malicious spirits, they are considered an omen of the worst kind, which could spell several issues for Geralt, Ciri, and company.

The Leshen

One of the biggest talking points from The Witcher‘s new season 2 trailer is the presence of the Leshen, a malicious forest spirit who begins to battle Ciri and Geralt. Both Sapkowki’s original Witcher books and the videogame series agree that the Leshen, or Leshy, is a dangerous creature that can also shapeshift into the form of other forest animals to disguise itself. While many villagers in The Witcher canon worship this creature, it preys on lost travelers and devours them whole. Seeing how Geralt and Ciri defeat this most difficult of foes will be a fascinating plotline in the highly anticipated The Witcher season 2.

The Crones

The other big reveal from The Witcher season 2 trailer is the allusion to the Crones’ presence, which has only featured previously in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt videogame. The Crones, or the Ladies of the Wood, are three horrifying creatures that reside in the dangerous Crookback Bog. The Crones can take on the appearance of beautful women to trick their unsuspecting enemies, whom they primarily boil alive and consume. Based on the legend of the Baba Yaga, the Crones also reside in a hut that stalks the edges of the bog, mirroring the ominous The Witcher season 2 trailer reveal.
