Anime feature spin-off Altered Carbon: Resleeved is set on a new planet with new dangers, but it still also several characters from the main series. Set during Takeshi Kovacs’ time as a mercenary, before he was killed and had his stack put on ice for 250 years, Altered: Carbon Resleeved finds Takeshi working for a yakuza boss in an effort to wipe his records.

Altered Carbon season 2 recently released on Netflix, picking up 30 years after the season 1 finale and bringing Takeshi to his home planet, Harlan’s World. In Altered Carbon: Resleeved, Takeshi has made a deal with the head of the Tanaseda clan to clear his record on Harlan’s World so that he can start a new life. To do that, however, Takeshi will have to protect a young tattoo artist called Holly from being assassinated by tech ninjas, and force himself to work together with a soldier from CTAC.

There’s more to the CTAC soldier than meets the eye, however; she’s actually someone from Takeshi’s past life who is wearing a new sleeve. Here are all three returning characters in Altered Carbon: Resleeved, and what roles they played in the main series.

Takeshi Kovacs

In Altered Carbon: Resleeved Takeshi Kovacs needlecasts onto Latimer, which means that he gets a new body. This one belonged to a soldier who had an unfortunate addiction to nicotine, resulting in Takeshi developing a nasty chain-smoking habit. It has been one year since the attack on Stronghold, in which rebel leader Quellcrist Falconer and Takeshi’s sister Reileen were seemingly killed. Since then he has been trying to survive and escape arrest by CTAC, and is now intent on erasing his past.

Reileen Kawahara

Takeshi’s sister Reileen had a major role in Altered Carbon season 1, played by Dichen Lachman. After Takeshi killed their abusive father at the age of 12, he enlisted with CTAC and Reileen was sold to the yakuza. She eventually escaped the yakuza’s clutches and joined the resistance movement, but grew jealous of Takeshi’s relationship with Quell and betrayed the rebels, leading to the attack on Stronghold. In Altered Carbon: Resleeved Reileen is wearing a new sleeve and has a new name – Gena – which means that Takeshi doesn’t realize who he’s working with. Reileen’s mission to protect Holly, who is effectively the property of the Mizumoto clan, is particularly personal because of Rei’s own past as a young girl exploited by the yakuza.

Tanaseda Hideki

Tanaseda Hideki was introduced in Altered Carbon season 2, played by James Saito. He is the head of a powerful yakuza clan on Harlan’s World and was one of the planet’s original founders. When Hideki and Takeshi are reunited in Altered Carbon season 2 it’s clear that the two of them have a lot of history, and Altered Carbon: Resleeved reveals the origins of their relationship.
