The Yes Day soundtrack offers Netflix viewers an eclectic mix of rock and modern R&B. Featured artists like Queen and the Ramones add a throwback element, while multiple tracks by the talented H.E.R. complement the singer’s late-movie cameo. Miguel Arteta’s comedy has global appeal with its family-friendly premise, but also because of the selected music that spans across various sub-genres.

Based on Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Tom Lichtenheld’s eponymous 2009 book, Yes Day follows a California couple that allows their three kids to set the family rules for 24 hours. Jennifer Garner stars as the uptight Allison Torres, a woman who means well but often gets lost in her thoughts about what could go wrong. Édgar Ramírez co-stars in Yes Day’s main cast as Carlos Torres, the archetypal Fun Dad who understands when to be stern and when to be fair with his children Katie (Jenna Ortega), Nando (Julian Lerner), and Ellie (Everly Carganilla). The Torres family spends a day navigating the greater Los Angeles area, which builds to a musical climax at Fleek Fest, with H.E.R. headlining the musical event.

Yes Day’s first half includes a steady amount of upbeat anthems as the Torres family participates in numerous events, while Michael Andrews’ score plays over quiet moments in the film. By the final act, the music becomes more chill and groovy, which perfectly sets up a cameo from H.E.R., a Grammy Award-winning musician from the San Francisco Bay Area. Here’s every featured song in the 2021 Netflix movie Yes Day.

“Another One Bites the Dust” – Queen

In the Netflix film, “Another One Bites the Dust” plays over an early expositional sequence, in which Garner’s character repeatedly says “No!” During a car ride, Ellie tells her father that it’s ok to play his preferred music, which leads to both of them rocking to “I Am a Gummy Bear.” A couple minutes later in Yes Day, the musical tone shifts when Ellie and Carlos sing the alternative rock classic “Epic.”

When Katie narrates about the ground rules for Yes Day, “Ready Let’s Go” sets the mood for the Torres family’s day-long adventure. A few moments later, “We’re a Happy Family” kicks in as the protagonists go through a car wash with the windows down. At Magic Mountain, “I Feel Good” scores a family montage sequence in the Netflix Original movie.

The band Allah-Las makes a cameo in Yes Day’s final act while performing “Catamaran” at Fleek Fest, and the anthemic “Best Day of My Life” captures the excitement of young characters who enjoy a foam party at the Torres family home. During the climax, Allison and Kate join H.E.R. on stage for a cover of “Baby I Need Your Loving.” As the Netflix movie ends, “I Just Wanna Shine” sets in and plays over the credits, and also during a post-movie sequence featuring Nat Faxon’s Mr. Deacon.

The Yes Day soundtrack was supervised by Stephanie Diaz-Matos (The Get Down, Little Voice, Wu-Tang: An American Saga).
