It’s no accident, as the Harvard-educated Michael Schur co-created Brooklyn Nine-Nine with Dan Goor after writing 12 episodes of The Office and portraying Mose Schrute.

Both The Office and Brooklyn Nine-Nine revolve around childish, underdog protagonists. In the NBC Scranton series, Michael Scott (Steve Carell) attempts to maintain control of the paper company Dunder Mifflin, but often gets manipulated by the work atmosphere that he created. In the cop series, which began on Fox and later moved to NBC, Andy Samberg’s Jake Peralta struggles with maturity issues, resulting in conflict with friends and colleagues. Craig Robinson

Craig Robinson makes his Brooklyn Nine-Nine debut in the season 1 episode “Pontiac Bandit.” He portrays the title character, otherwise known as Doug Judy: a criminal who is allegedly Jake’s arch-nemesis but actually gets along well with him. In The Office, Robinson starred as warehouse foreman Darryl Philbin, Dunder Mifflin Scranton employee who likes to avoid drama and the sales team as a whole. His other roles include Matheson in Pineapple Express and Nick in Hot Tub Time Machine.

Ed Helms

Best known for starring as the passive-aggressive sales manager Andy Bernard in The Office, Ed Helms made his Brooklyn Nine-Nine debut in the season 2 episode “USPIS.” He portrays Jack Danger, an arrogant USPIS agent who disappoints Jake and Charles upon revealing that his last is pronounced “DONG-ER” which doesn’t sound as cool as “DAYN-GER.” Helms stars as Stu in The Hangover movie franchise and portrayed Rusty Griswold in the 2015 movie Vacation.

Oscar Nuñez

Oscar Nuñez portrayed the gay accountant Oscar Martinez in The Office, a character who observes his zany co-workers and puts up with Michael Scott’s questionable behavior. Nuñez appears in the Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 3 episode “9 Days” as Dr. Porp, a medical professional who informs Jake and Holt that they both have mumps. Nuñez also appeared as Ramon in The Proposal and Councilman Rodriguez in the 2017 Baywatch movie.

Kate Flannery

Fans of The Office know Kate Flannery as Meredith Palmer, a Dunder Mifflin employee who often makes inappropriate statements in public settings and reveals too much information about her private life. Flannery similarly plays a blunt character in Brooklyn Nine-Nine named Marge Bronigan, the 99th precinct’s janitor who is known as Mean Marge. In the season 3 episode “Adrian Pimento,” she berates Charles, Terry, and Amy but ultimately comes to terms with them about an acceptable clean-up agreement, one that will benefit both the cops and janitors. Flannery voiced Carol in OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes and Barb Miller in Steven Universe.

Tim Meadows

A respected character actor, Tim Meadows is best known for starring on Saturday Night Live from 1991 to 2000, which led to a starring role as Leon Phelps in the 2000 comedy The Ladies Man. He later appeared in The Office season 2 episode “The Client,” portraying a Lackawanna County representative who laughs at Michael’s jokes before agreeing to a distribution deal. Meadows appears in multiple episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine as Caleb John Gosche, a cannibal who shares a cell with Jake and later offers jailhouse advice about a serial killer case.

Rob Huebel

Rob Huebel earned a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for starring as Dr. Owen Maestro in Children’s Hospital, and has appeared in various mainstream production over the years, both in movies (The Descendants, I Love You, Man) and TV (Big Mouth,The Goldbergs). In the Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 5 episode “Return to Skyfire,” he portrays an author named Landon Lawson who stages an extortion scheme. Huebel also appears in several episodes of The Office, beginning in season 5, as Holly Flax’s Nashua-based boyfriend, A.J.

Kyle Bornheimer

Kyle Bornheimer first shows up in Brooklyn Nine-Nine during the season 1 episode “Tactical Village,” playing Amy’s former boyfriend, Teddy. He later appears sporadically throughout the series, with his love for Pilsners being a recurring joke. In The Office season 4 episode “Local Ad,” Bornheimer portrays an ad man who assists Michael Scott with a Dunder Mifflin promo. Chris Bauer

One of the industry’s best character actors, Chris Bauer played the Baltimore dock worker Frank Sobotka in The Wire and Andy Bellefleur in True Blood. He shows up in the Brookyn Nine-Nine season 5 episode “The Negotiation,” portraying an NYPD negotiator who berates Jake for taking his first hostage situation. In The Office season 8 episode “Turf War,” Bauer appears as a Dunder Mifflin Syracuse employee who battles against the Scranton branch for control of Binghamton clients.

Jerry Minor: A former Saturday Night Live cast member, Jerry Minor portrayed a Jamaican restaurant owner named Brandon in two episodes of The Office season 8. He also appeared as the defense attorney Jerry Grundhaven in the Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 1 episode “Old School.”

Kevin Dorff: The bartender at Shaw’s Bar appears in several episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, beginning with the season 1 episode “Thanksgiving.” In The Office season 4, Kevin Dorff portrays an attorney named Aaron Grandy, a former Dunder Mifflin client.
