Every V and VMAX Card In The Pokémon Card Game

New battle mechanics continue to spice up gameplay in the Pokémon Trading Card Game thanks to the addition of variant mechanics like V and VMAX cards. Inspired by the Dynamax and Gigantamax abilities in Pokémon Sword and Shield, V and VMAX cards are rare variations that have higher HP and pack a powerful punch when used correctly. However, not every Pokémon in the series has a V or VMAX card, and using them can be risky during a high-stakes Pokémon TCG match.

Using V and VMAX Pokémon cards requires a different strategy than standard Pokémon cards. A V-type card is considered a Basic card, even if the Pokémon it features is technically an evolution. For example, Charizard would normally be a Stage 2 card, and the player would need to place a Charmander on the Bench or Active position and evolve it into Charmeleon before it could then be evolved into Charizard. However, a Charizard V card does not need Charmander or Charmeleon to be played. A VMAX card, which represents the Gigantamax or Dynamax mechanics from Pokémon Sword and Shield, is placed on a corresponding V-type card as an evolution. For example, this would evolve Charizard V into Charizard VMAX.

V cards in the Pokémon TCG have higher HP than a standard Pokémon, usually above the 150 HP mark. These cards also have powerful attacks and special abilities that can make a big difference in a match. When a V card is evolved into a VMAX, the Pokémon gets another boost in HP, and access to new powerful attacks. However, playing these Pokémon cards comes at a cost. If the player’s V-type monster is knocked out, the opponent takes 2 prize cards, and when a VMAX is knocked out, the opponent takes 3 prize cards. This can be devastating during the latter part of a Pokémon TCG match.
