Although Thor is best known for using Mjolnir as main weapon, he has used many others during his time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thor was the third superhero to be introduced through a solo movie in the MCU’s phase 1, and as such is part of the original team of the Avengers. Thor’s second big screen appearance was in The Avengers, where he joined the rest of the heroes to stop Loki and the Chitauri invasion.

A year later, Thor came back with his second solo movie, Thor: The Dark World, which isn’t the most memorable film in the MCU. In it, Thor and Loki team up to save the Nine Realms from Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) and the Dark Elves, who were planning on releasing the Aether and bring darkness to all realms. Thor: The Dark World was criticized for its story, pacing, and villain, and didn’t help with Thor’s popularity with MCU fans. However, his third solo film, Thor: Ragnarok, made major (and much needed) changes to his character, adding humor and making Thor a fun and interesting character, which extended to his role in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Prior to Ragnarok, Thor used his iconic hammer Mjolnir as main weapon, but his third solo adventure gave him the chance to use many others, even if briefly. Thor got a brand-new weapon in Infinity War, when he traveled to Nidavellir with Groot and Rocket Raccoon to build Stormbreaker with the help of Eitri (Peter Dinklage). Thor has used a variety of weapons so far: from custom-made to legendary Asgardian equipment and even human-made artifacts. Here’s every weapon Thor has used in the MCU besides Mjolnir.

Gravimetric Spikes

Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgård) spent the majority of Thor: The Dark World in a mental institution after having a major breakdown as a consequence of the mind control he was subjected to in The Avengers. Still, he continued working on his theories about the Convergence and created the Gravimetric Spikes to protect Earth. The Spikes were used but not as he initially planned, as Thor ended up throwing them at Malekith to severe his arms and then stabbing him on the chest, which allowed Jane to transport him back to Svartalfheim, where he was crushed by his own ship.

Doug’s Mace and Shield

When Thor was sold as a gladiator to the Grandmaster in Sakaar, his first battle turned out to be against the Hulk. At this point, Mjolnir was long gone and Thor didn’t have a weapon, so he took the mace and shield that belonged to Doug, who died after his battle also against the Hulk. Thor didn’t get to use them as he was too excited when he saw the Hulk in front of him, but he didn’t recognize the God of Thunder and attacked, making him lose the mace and shield.

Retractable Swords

Luckily, Thor had a plan B, and he took out two retractable swords. Sadly, they weren’t very resistant and were easily destroyed by the Hulk’s Sakaaran war hammer, leaving Thor without a weapon once more in the same battle.

Sakaaran War Hammer

The Hulk then tried to smash Thor with his Sakaaran war hammer, which Thor later used to defend himself. Thor took the hammer from the wall and attacked, and then tried once more to calm the Hulk down and bring Bruce Banner out, but he didn’t succeed. The battle continued and Thor kept using the Hammer, until the duel was ended by the intervention of the Grandmaster, as Thor had the upper hand.

Sakaaran Laser Rifle

Later on in Thor: Ragnarok, Loki and Thor used Sakaaran laser rifles to fight the Grandmaster’s guards during their big escape plan. Though it was a very brief moment, the image of Loki and Thor working together is one of the most memorable ones from the film, and it comes from this exact scene.

Gungnir

Gungnir was a powerful spear made of Uru (a godly metal forged in Nidavellir, also used in the creation of Mjolnir and Stormbreaker), used by the rulers of Asgard and which served as a symbol of Asgardian kingship. It was associated and used by the current king of Asgard, and king Bor (Odin’s father) used it in a war against the Dark Elves many, many years ago. Odin used it in the war against the Frost Giants, and years later Loki – when taking the throne of Asgard after Odin fell into Odinsleep and Thor was banished to Earth – took Gungnir to kill Laufey. Thor took it in Thor: Ragnarok when Hela arrived to take the throne of Asgard, and briefly used it in a duel against her.

Gungnir represents power and authority, and as it was made from godly metals, it carried many enchantments. The spear had a very powerful form of energy, granting the wielder the ability to project powerful and continuous energy blasts. It could also channel different forms of energy – for example, under Odin’s command, it was shown to channel dark energies (used to send Thor to Earth), and could also open and close the Bifrost Bridge. Gungnir was also linked to the Destroyer, and whoever had control of the spear could control the Destroyer.

Stormbreaker

Without Mjolnir and any other weapon following the events of Thor: Ragnarok, the God of Thunder was in need of one so he could fight against Thanos. Along with Groot and Rocket Raccoon, he traveled to Nidavellir in hopes of getting a new weapon. There he learned what happened to the dwarves, who were forced to build the Infinity Gauntlet for Thanos and were later destroyed by the Mad Titan, expect for King Eitri, who was left with metal covered hands so he couldn’t build anything else. Eitri then decided to forge Stormbreaker for Thor, which was possible with the help of Rocket, Groot, and Thor. Stormbreaker was used by Thor in Infinity War and Endgame, where he decapitated Thanos after failing to kill him in Infinity War. Thor used Stormbreaker and Mjolnir during the Battle of Earth, and Captain America also got to use the axe.

Stormbreaker is nigh-indestructible, to the point where it was able to withstand an energy blast powered by the six Infinity Stones. The axe can focus and enhance Thor’s powers, and can also channel dimensional energy and summon the Bifrost Bridge, which allowed Thor, Rocket, and Groot to travel to Wakanda. Like Mjolnir, Stormbreaker returns to Thor’s hand when summoned, but unlike it, it doesn’t have any enchantments preventing those deemed “unworthy” from using it. Stormbreaker is considered the strongest weapon in Asgard’s history, and will be interesting to see Thor using it again in Thor: Love and Thunder.
